Port Hueneme, California is a city located in Ventura County, California on the Pacific coast. The population was 54,569 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most heavily Hispanic cities in America. The history of Port Hueneme dates back to 1875 when Spanish missionaries founded the mission of San Vicente de los Reyes de la Luz on an uninhabited island in what is now known as Harbor City. In 1887, Juan Bautista Alvarado purchased and donated land east of present-day downtown for its incorporation as a municipality. The community name “Hueneme” means “Island of Peace” and refers to Mission San Vicente de Los Reyes de la Luz which was established in 1875 by Spanish missionaries as part of their effort to convert the indigenous people living on nearby islands into Christianity. After years of construction and dedicated service by many volunteers and local landowners, including members of the Alvarados family, Holy Cross Chapel opened on November 3, 1889 with Rev. José Gomez officiating. In 1914, during World War I, ammunition supplies needed for naval gunnery were landed at Santa Paula Island (nearpresent-day Hermosa Beach) for Operation Neptune's Spear; however, when it became clear that there would be no blockading action against Austria or Serbia because both countries had entered war on April 6th that year without declaring war yet, navy Captains George King and Ernest Jepson decided instead to move munitions stockpiled at Buena Vista Naval Air Station from Point Mugu onto Santa Paula Island after discovering that Point Mugu was not accessible from mainland Southern California due to dense vegetation. This event is commonly cited as the first time ammunition storage occurred off shore in UShistory. Port Hueneme is a small town in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 969 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first European to sight Port Hueneme was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on December 14, 1542 while sailing from Monterey Bay to San Francisco. On July 20, 1821, Commodore Perry's forces landed at what is now the old city docks and began their exploration of Southern California. They built a small fort here in 1827 as part of their defense against Comanche raiders who were terrorizing the area. In 1847 it was made a U.S. post office under the name Hueneme after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army bottled up travelers between Point Mugu and Camarillo on Highway 101 near present-day Ventura Boulevard. The post office closed in 1861 due to changes in U.S postal service policy that favored larger cities over smaller ones like Huenemewhich at that time had a population of only 375 residents (). In 1875–76 an entire block west of downtown was built for Coalinga Valley Railroad Company officials and employees with money donated by prominent citizens including Jules Verne and Horatio Alger Jr.. The company operated until it merged into the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1942 whenHueneme became an adjunct station on SP's Torrance Line (now known as Amtrak). The town experienced some growth during World War II as both munitions production and military housing were created here; however, most development came afterward as port facilities deteriorated or were abandoned after the war ended without redevelopment or new businesses coming online. Today much of what used to be downtown has been redeveloped into mixed-use housing, commercial space, and retail along with some remaining military infrastructure used for storage today but not actually used for anything since it no longer meets modern safety requirements (. There are plans to revamp all this using modern materials) making it one of few "smart" communities developed nationally following WW2 .

In 1916,Hueneme had a population of just over 1,000 people and was a small fishing town. However, with World War I raging and demand for goods generated by the war, Hueneme began to grow rapidly. By 1925, it had reached its present size with a population of over 10,000 people. The city annexed portions of unincorporated Butte County in 1928 and became an official city within the state of California that same year.
