When Port Hueneme was founded in 1868, it was a small town on the southern edge of Los Angeles County. The town’s population averaged only around 2,000 people and it didn’t until after World War II do any development take place. This is largely due to the hard work of its two men who were responsible for its rebirth- John Cone and Harry S. Truman. In 1941, John Cone passed away and was buried in San Bernardino National Cemetery. However, his legacy lives on through Harry S. Truman who donated land to Port Hueneme in 1951 as part of an effort to encourage more development in the town. In 1974, a new high school opened in Port Hueneme and has since grown into one of Southern California’s most successful schools. Today,Port Hueneme is known for its wide variety of shopping opportunities including unique boutiques, fine restaurants and significant amounts of nightlife options. Port Hueneme is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The history of Port Hueneme goes back to 1869 when it was founded as a ferry landing on the American River by Captain John B. de Port and his employees of the steamship Anchor Line. In 1916, Commodore George Wickersham donated land at present-day Harbor Drive for what would become the Municipal Pier and wharf areas of Port Hueneme. The first store opened in 1923 on Harbor Drive and the first school was built in 1927 on Moorish Hills Road. In 1936, Mayor Harry Siever designated portions of Rancho Santa Fe Park as an open space within which Port Hueneme could grow; this allowed for further development around harbor drive and into streets such as Yacht Way and Western Avenue. In 1954, during American president Dwight D Eisenhower's " Crusade for Peace," he visited Ventura County and Portsmouth Naval Air station to see Operation Neptune Spear bombing tests being conducted off Long Beach Island with then Secretary of Defense James Forrestal aboard USS Missouri (CVN-73) carrier group flying F4U Corsair fighters against airfields in Japan; Eisenhower later said that he felt "grateful" that America had been able to participate in such an important operation without getting caught up in World War II hostilities. After California statehood in 1850, Portsmouth Naval Air Station became part of San Diego Naval District; however, because San Diego Harbor wasn't deep enough to accommodate large naval vessels moored there, Commander Edward Jenson decided to build a new naval air station adjacent to Padres Freeway (former US 101) just east of downtown San Diego – now known as NAS Long Beach Joint Sector Headquarters Complex or LBJHSC). On December 1st 1957 Captains William Linnell & Earl Kappenberg arrived with their Lockheed P-38 Lightning torpedo bombers from USAFE’s USS Grumman E flight deck at NAS Long Beach Joint Sector Headquarters Complex while Vice Admiral Arthur Radford flewSpirit Airlines jetliners carrying passengers between JFK Airport New York City (LGA) and Laguna Niguel Playa del Carmen Mexico City international airport through LBJHSC airspace – one mile outside our airspace! By the early 21st century, however,Hueneme's economy had begun to decline as container shipments decreased and exports declined. In 2018, Port Hueneme ceased operations due to low passenger traffic and competition from nearby cities such as Oakland and Fremont.
