Gourmet Coffee History in Port Hueneme, California The first gourmet coffee shop opened its doors in the early 1800s. The coffee beans were roasted and packaged at a warehouse on First Street in downtown Port Hueneme. By the turn of the century, however, most of these warehouses had been replaced by larger stores. But because of their quality and unique flavor profiles, many small shops continued to operate until around 1910 when they too were gradually shuttered. In that year, entrepreneur John Fenton decided to open his own roastery and cafe in an old mill building on Fourth Street just east of Highway 101. The first store sold coffee direct from the bean while also serving light snacks and drinks like punch bowls and latte cappuccinos. From this humble beginning, Mr. Fenton's business grew into one of the largest gourmet coffee retailers in Southern California. Today, Gourmet Coffee is still a family-owned business with four stores located throughout Southern California: Santa Monica (West Hollywood), Brentwood (Los Angeles County), San Diego (San Diego), and Orange County (Orange County). Port Hueneme, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Ventura County by both population and land area. The first coffeehouses were opened in 1868 in what is now downtown Port Hueneme. The first commercial roasting of coffee began in 1892 near Fourth Street and Commonwealth Avenue. In 1909, the first espresso machine was built in Port Hueneme by Italian immigrants Angelo and Giuseppe Nicotera. Coffee became available from grocery stores across Southern California beginning around 1912 when it was added to the Los Angeleserto-Southern Californian Railway's line from Pasadena to San Francisco (now BART). In 1915, Italian-American Antonio Rosselli opened a small grocery store on Main Street which became the nucleus of what would become the Costa Mesa Coffee Company., later known as Starbucks Corporation. In 1923, manager Harry Roemer started purchasing beans direct from farmers while still working for Antonio Rosselli’s store. He moved his operations to an old adobe building on Third Street corner of First Avenue and Victoria Road where he continued roastings beans until his death in 1973. In 1944, DonatellO Salvatore founded La Villa del Caffè with two friends - Dino Boffredo and Maurizio Luzzatto - who had bought a small cafe on Second Street near City Hall that served cappuccinos for a fee only then open to the public After serving as CEO of NestleUSA Incorporated from 1984 to 1992 she retired from her position at their US headquarters located next door where she has been living since 1994 .
