Port Hueneme is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Hueneme" comes from Spanish meaning "inland". The first Europeans to visit Port Hueneme were the Mayas who built villages there around 1440 AD. An additional group of Spaniards appeared in 1602 and named it San Lucas de los Caballeros (St. Luke's Fortress). These early explorers likely encountered Native American people living near present-day Harbor City before sailing away on their ships for new discoveries in the region. In 1847, Commodore John Dory discovered the harbor and town of Santa Clara while exploring southern California looking for a route to San Francisco Bay. He named it after his friend and mentor Rear Admiral David Dominguez - nowSanta Barbara County - who had accompanied him on this important discovery expedition. The next year, 1848, Mexican War veteran José Joaquin Mora founded Rancho Los Nietos del Norte adjacent to what is now Port Hueneme Boulevard in what later became part of downtown Port Hueneme. In 1850, Mora donated land that included much of what is now downtown Port Hueneme as well as most of today's neighborhoods including North Park and East Village. At that time there were no streets or buildings within today's boundaries; all roads crossed by open fields with houses set back from them on either side retains much of its rural character to this day! When Southern Pacific Railroad began construction along its current alignment through Ventura County in 1901-1902, work stopped at an old water tower just south of wherepresent-day East Village stands today because there was not yet a railroad crossing available over the riverbeds east of Veteran's Memorial Blvd., which forms Parthenon Lake (.
