The coffee industry in Port Hueneme, California has been around for over a hundred years. The first farmers in this area grew coffee beans on their own property. In the 1920s, a company called The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Company was started by E.B. White and his friends. They were the first to commercially produce coffee in this area. In the 1940s, Port Hueneme became a major port town with the arrival of World War II sailors and their ships full of cargo of Allied goods such as munitions and food. This period is also known as "the golden age" of the port town because so much progress was made in terms of transportation, commerce, and infrastructure. Coffee began to be produced at Port Hueneme's two mills in the early 1950s when Don Freeman purchased one of these mills from The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Company. He turned it into a world-renowned roaster and sold it to J&R Roasters in 1964. At that time, J&R was one of the largest roasters in America with its own manufacturing plant located adjacent to Roasting House Square on Market Street near downtown Port Hueneme. During this time period other companies such as Peet's Coffee (now part of Nestle) started producing coffee too but they didn't quite take off until after Don Freeman's death in 1984. It wasn't until 1988 that Starbucks opened its doors here at Roasting House Square which quickly became an international sensation due to its high quality espresso drinks (and now we all know what all those famous red cups mean). Today, there are many different types of coffee beans grown here ranging from Indonesian Sumatra to Guatemalan Robusta Beans - any kind you could want! Some producers even go beyond just traditional Arabica beans by growing specialty coffees like Patagonian Blend or Ethiopian Hario Bagsamoyo Beans which give each cup its unique flavor profile!
