Port Hueneme is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern coast of San Pedro Bay. The Strait of Juan de Fuca forms the eastern border of Port Hueneme and separates it from Long Beach to the east. The first Europeans to explore and trade in Port Hueneme were Manuel Nieto and Gaspar de la Hoz, who sailed up the bay in 1769 for the Spanish Empire. In 1821, Commodore John Dutton charted what was then called "Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion" (Our Lady of Conception) Cove on which Port Hueneme now stands as one of his two anchorages for San Clemente Island off Santa Barbara County. At that time there were no permanent residents in or near present-day Port Hueneme; only fishermen and their boats coming in for supplies during periods of high surf or stormy weather. In 1881, port officials decided to build a wharf on what is now Harbor Drive because ships could not come ashore long enough to unload their cargo at Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion Cove without getting wet instead of through Channel 9's narrow passage between Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion Peninsula and Point Concha mainland. The wharf resulted in an increase in traffic due to its easy access into town by rail from Long Beach and other points inland; it also facilitated larger shipments being made by vessels than could be handled by sailing ships alone or even with a single mooring mast on an anchored vessel. Some early businesses that operated out ofport include A&P grocery store (now closed), Mrs.[? McAllister's] bakery (closedown), Laundromat (now defunct), Harry Janssen's hardware store (closedown), and several small restaurants such as Don Julio's Mexican restaurant, Gino's Italian restaurant, Chinese Restaurant #1 Japanese-owned restaurant, Texaco service station #1 open since 1928 - all opened before 1910 when Prohibition began prohibiting importation of alcohol into California The harbormaster who built the wharf was Cesar Chavez with help from local farmers who donated land along with money raised from excursion rates charged by trains traveling through town stopping at each stoplight along Railroad Avenue

Port Hueneme, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The town was founded in 1887 by Captain George C. Potter and his family. The city has since grown to become one of the most important agricultural and commercial centers in the state. Port Hueneme is also home to several colleges and universities, including San Diego State University, UC Irvine, and Chico State University. The history of Port Hueneme goes back to 1887 when Captain George C. Potter built a small camp on the banks of the Pacific River at what is now known as Healdsburg. In 1889, Potter moved his initial population to Port Hueneme from Red Bluff, California due to a typhoon that had struck Red Bluff three weeks earlier. The town rapidly became an important commercial center due to its location close to major railroads and its available land for farming. In 1907, Potter donated 1,000 acres of land east of town along Highway 101 for use as a public school district. That same year saw the opening of the first high school in Port Huenename-Red Bluff High School which was known as North Coast High School until 1951 when it became San Diego State University's East Campus HSS (now San Diego State University India Campus). In 1923, Potter donated another 1,000 acres of land east of town for use as a college campus-San Diego State College at Port Hueneme would be established just two years later in 1925! Today San Diego State University's East Campus HSS (now San Diego State University India Campus) continues to serve as both our educational institution and primary research center for our students across all campuses within SDSU! In 1941, following World War II service members return home from overseas deployments and needed new homes so they could start their lives anew; Fort Ord began construction on what would eventually become known as "The Hub" - today's South Hall Tower! This new housing development would provide much-needed affordable housing for war veterans and their families during the early postwar period...a time when many Americans were struggling economically after combat duty! Additionally, some legacy projects associated with our predecessor institutions include: groundbreaking for Our Lady Of Good Counsel Hospital in 1949; construction of Hearst Castle which served as student dormitory during both Cal Poly Pomona's first full enrollment (1927-28) and then later Caltech's first enrollment (1934); renovation/updates/replacement/addition to Regent Drive Elementary School which occurred between 1957-1959; addition/renovation/updates/replacement/addition to Weiser Middle School which occurred between 1961-1964...the list goes on! As America transitioned into the 21st century there were multiple waves of migration that impacted our small community: Latinos made up 25% or more of our population by 2000 while Asians reached 15%. With such diversity came increasing economic opportunities withEnterprise Zone developments springing up throughout downtown Los Angeles County while elsewhere developing inland communities attracted wealthy retirees who invested over $1 billion dollars into real estate here over 10 years!!! These days you can find plenty OF retail options including major chains like Macy's & Sears inside what used once been primarily agriculture concentration areas!!! Lastly we continue experiencing growth thanks largely to efforts by City Councilmember Libby Schaaf who championed passage last yearof Measure AA aka "Huenemerization" resulting in significant investment totaling over $500 million being brought downtown thru various anchor businesses thru redevelopment!!!
