The Port Hueneme National Guard Museum in California has a rich history of giving gifts to the community. The museum was founded in 1958 and is dedicated to preserving the history of the Port Hueneme National Guard. The first gift from the Port Hueneme National Guard Museum was a Bible. Abraham Lincoln gave this Bible to the museum as a thank you for their support during his run for President in 1860. In 1970, another gift from the National Guard Museum came when they donated $1,000 to help build the new library at Lighthouse Beach Elementary School. This donation helped contribute to expanding library services in Port Hueneme. From 1978-1981, The Port Hueneme National Guard Museum donated $10,000 towards renovating and reconstructing Camp San Luis Obispo as it had been since World War II. This donation helped improve infrastructure and barracks at Camp San Luis Obispo which then became available for use by local schools. The modern National Guard was first organized on December 15, 1903 by the National Guard Bureau in Washington D.C. The purpose of the Guards was to provide a reserve for the military and to act as a deterrent against insurrection. When World War I began, theNational Guard was called into service and fought in many theaters of war. After the armistice, the National Guard was disbanded but later re-organized under state control. In 1937, Congress created an Armorial Branch within the National Guard which provided arms and armor to national guard units throughout America. The first armored unit of The National Guard arrived in California in 1939. In 1951,The National Guard became an active duty military service with all branches conducting operations together under one command structure known as The Department of Defense (DoD). During the Vietnam War, there were numerous protests and riots against American troops deployments across our country. There were also several high profile arrests of members or commanders of The NationalGuard during this time period including William “Jerry” Brown who served two terms as Governor of California after leading a group that burned down Sacramento City Hall; Melvin Laird who led a group that bombed Los Angeles International Airport; and John Lennon who had his Beatles album produced at Universal Studios while performing at Soldier Field before being arrested nearby on suspicion of inciting violence
