The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) is responsible for the care and Preservation of the United States Navy's history. The NHHC's Ships in Service Museum (SHIPM) is located in Port Hueneme, California and honors the memory of the navy's deployed gift history. SHIPM began as a Department of Defense-owned museum in 1994. In 2006, Shipmuseum transitioned to a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with the goal of bringing awareness to America's military deployments through exhibits, education programs, and outreach to local communities. The collection at SHIPM includes naval vessels from throughout American history including both World War II era vessels and those that have served since the Vietnam War. There are also numerous pieces from navies around the world Diplomatic Vessels Collection which includes ships used by foreign governments when their diplomats visit American shores. USS Constitution Museum: USS Constitution Museum was opened on May 25th, 1994 by then Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney as a shrine to all things related to USS Constitution - from her construction until she was decommissioned in 1998 after serving in three wars. The museum contains artifacts associated with her time spent at NAS Patuxent River during World War II as well as items related to her post-war career primarily stationed off Hawaii where she participated in counterinsurgency operations before being decommissioned on October 1st, 1946. Outside of WWII period relics include model boats depicting events leading up to or occurring during that conflict while inside there are several displays on topics ranging from Guam sovereignty issues during World War II right up until early 21st century interactions between our country and China
