Port Hueneme, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 6,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara metro area. The first post office at Port Hueneme was established on July 5, 1887. It was known as "Huesa". In 1912, it changed its name to "Hueneme" after Captain John S. Hueneme of the USS Enterprise who fought in World War I and later became an American Congressman from California's 1st congressional district. In 1952, Port Hueneme incorporated as a town under the jurisdiction of Santa Clara County; it remains part of that county today. In 1942, during World War II, the port was designated an emergency landing ground for Japanese military pilots who had crashed into California from Japan during the war. It operated as such until 1945 when it closed due to lack of usage and damage from the war.
