This establishment served coffee and pastries until about 1870. In 1881, a small grocery store called the Hermitage opened on First Street near present-day University Avenue in Port Hueneme. This store continued to serve groceries until it closed in 1927. The first port of call for sailors during World War II was at the Hermitage Store which became known as "the Hump" because of its large size and location on First Street near University Avenue in Port Hueneme. Captain John Wohlgemuth operated a ferry from Santa Cruz County Pier #2 to Monterey Bay for passengers and goods coming into and going out of San Francisco from early 1942 until his death in 1945. The Captain's Ferry Company also transported military personnel and supplies between Monterey Bay and various points along the coast including Point Reyes National Seashore, Sausalito, Tiburon Peninsula, etc., using large boats equipped with landing ramps at several locations along the way
Port Hueneme, California is a small town located in Southern California. It was founded by Spanish colonists in 1821 and has since been known for its citrus fruits, swimming pools, and golf courses. The town currently has a population of just over 5,000 people. The history of Port Hueneme begins with the arrival of Spanish colonists to Southern California in 1821. These settlers were looking for a new place to live after being displaced by the Mexican War. They chose Port Hueneme because it was a small port on the Pacific coast that could handle goods coming into southern California. The first European to visit Port Hueneme was José Manuel Arguelles on November 17, 1821. He was asked by Captain Diego Rivera if he could find any good land near the port so that he and his men could settle down and start farming. Arguelles found some good land but wasn't sure if he wanted to sell it because it would be so close to Mexico City. He instead decided to build a house in order to stay closer to his family back home in Spain. The first permanent settler inPortHuenemewas Don Francisco Alonso de la Boca y Costilla on July 1, 1824. La Boca had come from Spain with his wife Ana de Torres y López and their three children: Francisco (1825-1902), María Isabel (1827-1892),and Antonio José de la Boca (1829-1900). He started out by planting fruit trees along the shoreline and soon established himself as one of the most important landowners in town. He also developed an irrigation system which allowed him to produce large quantities of oranges and other crops year round without depending on rainfall or sources of water outside of town limits. Port Hueneme is a small town in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 1,747 at the 2000 census. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Ventura. The town was founded in 1887 by Spanish settlers as part of the Channel Islands Colony and became an incorporated municipality in 1925. It has since been abandoned and its only hope for revival is its status as a charter community for people with disabilities. The earliest residents of Port Hueneme were Californios who had been expelled from their original land base due to Mexican-American War hostilities. A post office was established at Port Hueneme on April 20, 1887, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 14, 1923. In 1925, the City Council voted to annex neighboring towns Simi Valley and Santa Barbara because they did not have a proper water system or police department. At that time there were only 2 houses in the entire town and no businesses except for a few stores run by individual citizens. In 1951 then-Mayor Don Siegel proclaimed October 15th "Port Hueneme Day" in commemoration of all that had happened during that year's city hall campaign including his successful efforts to get the city annexed into Ventura County along with Simi Valley and Santa Barbara counties which had already done so without any legislation from Mayor Siegel himself! In fact, many people still consider this date as one of my personal triumphs storywise when I look back over my years spent working within our county government...It wasn't easy (I know), but I really wanted it to happen!
