The latest example is the deployment of a Boeing 707 cargo plane with a shipment of air force gifts to deployed service members in Afghanistan. Porterville has been inhabited since the late 1800s and its first post office was established in 1892. The community name derives from early settlers, who named it for Elisha Porter, an American merchant who traveled through the area on horseback. In 1881, Porterville school District No. 1 was organized and began instruction in what is now Porterville Elementary School. Over time, other school districts were formed and residents of neighboring communities consolidated to form the present day Porterville School District #2 which serves students from all of Kern County as well as portions of Orange County and Tulare County. One of the earliest businesses in Porterville was J & L Saloon which opened its doors in 1886. It continued to serve local residents until 1971 when it closed its doors after more than 65 years of operation. Other early businesses included A Famed bakery (1889), Wagon Wheel restaurant (1902), Mrs Kapp's dress shop (1904), and Ira Hargrave's general store (1906). Today there are few if any remaining buildings from these earlier days but many evidence marker sites throughout the town attest to their importance to the community during that time period.
