Porterville is a small town in California, and its residents are proud of their military heritage. The Air Force Base here has been home to the Porterville-based 493rd Bomb Wing since 1951, and it has also been home to the Chennault AFB Museum. The museum is dedicated to the history and culture of air force pilots and officers who have served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Cold War. It is also home to the largest air traffic control tower in Southern California. The Chennault AFB Museum was founded in 1984 by Colonel Harry Chennault Jr., one of Porterville’s most notable citizens. Colonel Chennault was an ace fighter pilot who flew missions during World War II and Korea. He later served as commander of Air Force One for President Ronald Reagan before retiring from the military in 1988. In 1992, he donated his collection of aircraft to the Porterville-based museum. The 493rd Bomb Wing at Porterville is one of the oldest unit stationed at Chennault AFB Museum. It was activated on 1 November 1951 as part of Project Skylab I, which aimed to develop airborne communication links between Earth and space using United States satellites. The wing remained active untilactivated on 31 March 1993 when it became subordinate to 2nd Bomb Wing at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. The wing moved its operations back to China Lake Naval Air Station located near San Diego in 1994 after years of being based at Offutt AFB outside Omaha Nebraska due to budgetary reasons within Headquarters USAF). The wing relocated again when Offutt AFB closed its doors in 1999 but continued operations outof China Lake Naval Air Station until its closure in 2006 commanded by First Lieutenant David Lunsford (retired) 4th Squadron 5th Bomb Wing). Today there are three squadrons flying CF-18 Hornets: 4th squadron ( Tactics & Combat Training), 8th squadron ( flies F/A-18E/F Super Hornets),and 17th squadron ( fly Boeing 727 Flying training commands). In addition there is an Operational Test Range used for a variety as many different types of testing as possible including everything from manned bomber flights through precision munitions testing; Noncombat Research range which includes conducting fire tests with artillery rounds; Missile ranges; Aerial Refueling areas where KC-135 Stratotankers or EADS Pave Hawks refueled other aircraft during exercises or deployments; Helicopter Flight Test Sites - both single seat and multirole helicopter flight tests are conducted here; Edwards Aircraft Hangar - this hangar can house up to 12 HH-60 Seahawk helicopters for various detachment actions such as providing aerial intelligence support activities or providing lift for special forces operators working undercover etc.; Overhead Launch Point - used for launching Tomahawk Missiles from helicopters into orbit

In addition to this, many restaurants have relocated or closed their doors due to changes in cuisine or competition from nearby towns like Menifee or Turlock. However, with some investment by Mayor Tom Klemmer over the past few years things are slowly starting to improve for Portervilleites as more local jobs have been added to help support families while also attracting more tourists who enjoy discovering old buildings and attractions along Third Street between US 101W/Rancho Cordova Boulevard and Eighth Avenue
