The Porterville Army National Guard was established on November 11, 1861. The unit was organized as the 1st Battalion, California Infantry. On December 18th of that year, it was redesignated as the 1st Regiment, California Volunteer Infantry. On July 9th of 1862, it was reorganized as the 2nd Battalion and redesignated as the 3rd Regiment, California Volunteer Infantry. On April Fool's Day 1865, the regiment disbanded due to lack of volunteers and replacement troops being available in time for the end of World War II.
Porterville is a small town located in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Porterville is part of the Sierra Vista– Jerome, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area. A post office called Porterville was established in 1887, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1971. The first settlers of Porterville were John and Anna Porter who arrived from Ohio in 1868. Anna's father had been born in what is now West Virginia but moved with his family to California when Anna was only two years old. After moving to Porterville, the Porters founded a grocery store and began trading goods with other settlements around Inyo County. The community developed slowly but steadily over the next few decades as various farmers added their own homes and businesses to the mix. A school was built on the east side of town by 1912 and soon after numerous other shops and businesses opened up along State Route 66 which paralleled the main street in town. By 1950, there were over twenty businesses operating within a one-mile radius of town center including several banks, a insurance company, an auto dealership/repair shop, several restaurants/bars/nightclubs etc., as well as thirty dwellings housing many of local families who worked farms or ranching properties outside of town limits during much of each year. Thanks largely to Interstate 15 which crossed through town just south of its boundaries (the first interstate ever constructed on this area), transportation became increasingly important for residents throughout much of the 20th century; by 1990 there existed only three residences without any sort of commercial development within one-mile radius surrounding it! With increased access to jobs available outside city limits thanks both to large-scale industrialization that took hold throughout most Western US during this time period (and following World War II when vast amounts of new construction troops came intotown) as well as increasing water usage due mostly to agricultural growth (and later suburban expansion – especially westward – throughoutInyo County)), more people started coming intotown for work rather than staying put near home all day long like they had done before; thus continuing an increase in population over time that has continued unabated even as today's economy faces increased competition from elsewhere across North America! : As mentioned earlier - numerous businesses have opened up around here since 1950! The 1st Infantry Division is an infantry division of the United States Army. It is headquartered in Fort Benning, Georgia and is one of the branches of the Army. The division was formed on 1 July 1917 as part of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. On 10 May 1945, it was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Division and activated at Fort Knox, Kentucky on 18 October 1945. The division served in a number of wars including World War II, Korea and Vietnam before being disbanded on 28 June 2006.
