It has a population of about 18,000 people and is the home to Porterville Coffee Co., one of the oldest coffee shops in California. The shop began as a small grocery store on Third Street in Porterville and was first opened by Julius and Flora Porter in 1912. The shop was purchased by Harry James Crowley in 1954, who renamed it Harry J. Crowley Coffee & Tea Company. In 1969, Harry James Crowley passed away and his son-in-law, Dick Mathews became president and CEO of the company. In 1990, Dick Mathews retired from the company and was replaced by his grandson John Henschel. In 2002, John Henschel resigned from the company after being accused of sexual harassment against two female employees at the store; he was later found not guilty on all charges but agreed to leave the business effective immediately.
Porterville, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Porterville is one of the most rural areas in the state and has a largely agricultural economy with a single industry, cotton farming. The first people to settle in Porterville were Mormons who traveled from Salt Lake City in 1847. They founded what would become known as the Mormon Village on Rancho la Purisima. In 1848, some of these Mormons also moved to Porterville and began to build what would become known as Rice Hall which still stands today. This initial settlement was made up of primarily white men and their families while many black families also lived in Porterville at this time. In 1860, when the Civil War started, many Portervillians enlisted into the Union army and fought for General Ulysses S. Grant against Confederate forces. While some residents did not fight or choose not to evacuate their homes due to fear of retribution by pro-Confederate forces, most residents chose to leave because they saw no other way out of the war. After the end of the war, many of these veterans returned home and began Reconstruction efforts which helped rebuild much of Southern California after it had been devastated by war. Many new businesses were born out of reconstruction including Cotton States Manufacturing Company which manufactured flour for local breadwinners until 1951 when it merged with Archer Daniels Midland company making it one of America’s largest food companies As prosperity grew throughout post-war America, so too did immigration from all over Europe along with refugees from various wars around Asia In 1965, Porterville became incorporated as an unincorporated municipality . The incorporation allowed for more organized government services such as firefighting and police protection which have since helped keep our community safe during times of high activity or emergency

The first post office serving Porterville was established on July 16, 1878. The name of the town changed several times until it was finally chosen as Porterville in 1886 by vote of the citizens. At that time there were only two stores and one school in the community. The downtown district has been renovated many times since its inception and currently features several restaurants and businesses including Alder's Pizza & Pasta Shop (now Papa John's Pizza), Ford's Chinese Grocery (now Super 7), ABC Furniture Outlet Store (closed 2006), Paws 'N' Toes pet store (closed 2013) and The Grapes restaurant/cafeteria complex which opened in 1998 on what used to be an open-air gristmill. In recent years Porterville has seen significant growth with new housing developments being built throughout town as well as new businesses opening up such as HP Pavilionof Kern Valley and SBAbank - both large banks based out of Bakersfield which are now having their presence here also
