The Porterville Coast Guard Station, which is located on the mouth of the Porter River, has been providing service to the community since 1907. The station was originally built as a lighthouse and then used as a barracks for local officers and men. In 1965, the Porterville Coast Guard Station became an official branch of the California State Defense Force. In 2007, the Porterville Coast Guard Station was renamed in honor of Lieutenant Commander James A. Fenton, who served with distinction during World War II as a Petty Officer First Class with the California State Defense Force. Lt. Commander Fenton alsoserved with distinction during The Vietnam War as Battalion Chief of Security for Pleiku Air Base. Today, the Porterville Coast Guard Station provides law enforcement services in support of various state and federal agencies including U.S Customs and Border Protection, National Park Service, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Centers and other government organizations. Additionally, the station offers visitor services such as boat launches and kayaking tours along the Porter River throughout its 8-acre area.

The Coast Guard became an operational service on December 15, 1915 when it was created from the old US Customs Service and the Revenue Cutter Service. The first coast guard stations were located in New York City and Washington D.C.. In 1917, the Coast Guard began providing air support for American forces in World War I. In 1935, the Coast Guard separated into two service branches: Patrol Squadron One (now called Helicopter Squadron Five) and Sector Watch Group Three (now Sector Watch Group Four). On July 1, 1968, the United States Congress passed act which renamed both services as the National Security Agency with Headquarters at Fort Meade Maryland. By 1969, there were over 12500 members of the National Security Agency divisional staffs across 46 countries. As part of its responsibilities as a national security agency, NSA operates both electronic intelligence collection programs and secure communications networks around the world that support military and other government activities. In addition to its homeland security mission, NSA also conducts secret operations such as SIGINT (signals intelligence), HUMINT (human intelligence), and SIGARED (signaling intelligence analysis). Today's Coast Guard comes out ahead of time because it has been able to keep our country safe since 1898 by using technology to do so- something that no other force can say!
