Porterville is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Porterville is located on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay and is adjacent to Pinole and Richmond counties. The first people who lived in Porterville were members of the Ohlone tribe. They built huts on the bank of the bay for fishing and trading with other tribes. The first permanent settler in Porterville was John Atherton in 1853. He bought land from the Native Americans and built a cabin near what is now downtown Porterville. In 1865, Captain George Hearn founded the town of Hearst on parts of his Rancho Atascadero which he donated to the town for development as housing and business opportunities opened up around him. Hearst's children, among others, established commercial enterprises that continue into this day: Jardine-Village Insurance Company (founded 1892), Alexander Trask Brewing Company (founded 1907), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Division No. 1 (founded 1926), Southern Pacific Railroad's Hayward Branch Line Station (opened 1927). In 1909, Mayor James Fenton dedicated an area east of downtown called Park View Heights after Drury Park estate owner Augustus Earle Gilbert who had given financial support to various civic organizations including those working towards developing park land east of downtown into an open space accessible by all citizens for public use. Today portions of this original Gilbert donation still exist within present day Park View Heights neighborhood; part also exists within much larger University District neighborhood east of downtown which became home to many businesses starting with AT&T’s Bell Laboratories before it moved out to Midtown San Francisco in 1992 when that district lost its autonomy under then-Mayor Willie Brown

Porterville is named after Commodore John Porter and his family who founded the town in 1852. The first post office in Porterville was established in 1855. The first store opened in 1861, and the first school was built in 1865. In 1881, Porterville became an incorporated city. The heyday of Porterville came during World War II when it became one of the most important airfields on the Pacific Coast. The city also played an important role in developing electronics equipment for American soldiers during World War II and postwar years. After the war, Porterville experienced a period of decline which culminated with its incorporation into Kern County as part of a larger plan to shift more rural residents away from urban areas towards Model T-style townships called "New Towns". This portion lying immediately adjacent both current day Downtown Porterville proper including present day mission building(the old adobe/masonry structure were moved from their original location 3 blocks SW corner lot corner “Stovepipe Alley” house built by Mrs Jane Addams direct descendants ranches hereabouts back when this area was still Rancho San Gabriel de Jonás see map pgs 6 & 7), old sheriff's office building on corner Gentry St., now home to our medical examiner's office; Post Office Building completed early 1860's said by George Kapp [of Kapp Bros Coal Mines] – seen today on corner 2nd street WEST Old School House – Built c1865?
