It was called Post Office #1 because it served the entire Porterville area from that point forward. In 1907, the United States Post Office moved from its original location to what is now the old courthouse square in downtown Porterville. The new building had been built for $2,500 and it served as the post office until 1959 when it was replaced by the present courthouse which cost $40,000 to build. The First Baptist Church began services here on October 2, 1888. Built at a cost of $3,000 dollars this structure is one of oldest Baptist churches still standing in Northern California today.
