Porterville, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It is a community of about 7,000 people and it is the only incorporated town in Kern County. Porterville was founded on October 1, 1853 by James A. Porter and his family as a post office named for him. The population of Porterville peaked at 10,500 in 1925 but has declined since then. In 2000, the city had an estimated population of 5,332. Porterville is home to many businesses including four banks and two grocery stores. The local paper mill closed in 2003 but the mill building still stands and is used as a museum today. It began as an agricultural community in the late 1800s and became a major center for cotton production during the early 20th century. After World War II, Porterville growth slowed as many people left for jobs in larger cities. However, since the 1990s, Porterville has seen some resurgence as a commercial and residential center. The first permanent settler in Porterville was Wm Hanks who arrived around 1887. Hanks built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after his friend and neighbor John Porter. By 1890, several other settlers had also moved to Porterville and it grew rapidly from its original village size of just 10 residents to over 100 by 1900. By 1910, there were over 150 people living in Porterville and it was considered one of the largest cotton towns in California. During World War I, both America and Great Britain needed food supplies for their troops so they transported cotton from plantations throughout Texas to be processed into munitions (guns). Cotton ginners used water power to turn raw cotton leaves into yarn which was then woven into cloth or other products using looms that could produce up to eight pieces of cloth per minute*. In 1915-16*, when American forces liberated France from Germany* (*the war ended on September 17th 1916), much of that cotton came through Porterville as local farmers took advantage of Allied shipping restrictions on German-owned vessels.* Consequently, between 1915-16*, more than one million pounds (454 metric tons) of fresh American cotton landed at Long Beach Naval Shipyard†(*now Harbor City Naval Station),‡ giving new life to this once sleepy farming community* [*of course not all locals welcomed this additionalSource: "PorterVILLE - A History" by Don Beasley] As can be seen from these statistics*, Porterville quickly emerged as one of southern California's most important agricultural communities during the 1920s." In 1925*, when Southern Pacific Railroad reached downtown PorterVILLE from San Diego via Interstate 15* [*the first such train journey ever], many businesses opened up including two banks* [*one founded in 1903 by G F Cooke & Company], three stores* [*and two movie theaters], six churches** [*including First Baptist Church which would become Calvary Chapel United Methodist Church] four schools** [*four were founded between 1923-1929 *and served grades PreKindergarten through 8th grade], two hotels**** [First National Hotel later became Holiday Inn Express], twelve residences*** [*nineteen originally]; thirty acres (120 hectares) were set aside for schools; eighty thousand dollars (equivalent to $1 million today) was allocated for infrastructure; ninety percent ( ninety out of every hundred )of all activity within downtown occurred within five years***** (*This period is often referred to as "Downtown Dolling 1920-1930") On July 4th 1930***,[G F Cooke & Co.] donated land adjacent to Depot Square across Depot Road from Post Office Square totaling 85 acres northward along Depot Road; Woodward Bros., hardware store frontage south along Depot Road opposite LockeHouse Auto Sales garage continued until 1925 when property reverted back to G F Cooke & Co.; SW Corner Of E Powell Rd And D Staples Rd.- South side Of FF Drury Way extended To Payne Avenue On NW corner Of Midtown Ave.- North side Of Payne Ave.–all This land Approximatelly bordered On E Side Of Pender St.– Allowed For A Parkland With A Playground Or Tennis Court […] At That Time There Were No Streets Named After These Persons
