The population was 9,651 at the 2010 census. The area that now Porterville was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. A post office called Porterville was established in 1892, and the name change to its present spelling in 1915. The first store in Porterville was built on First Street in 1896. The town started as a agricultural community with a few dozen homes and a few hundred acres of land. In 1912, it had 1 grocery store, 2 hardware stores, 4 banks, 5 schools, 1 fire department and 2 churches. By 1919, the population had increased to 10 businesses and 100 residents. In 1942, during World War II, Porterville became an airbase for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). During this time it also saw significant growth as an industrial center with production of munitions and aircraft parts including aluminum cans and airplane propellers. After World War II ended in 1945, there were no major changes until 1980 when new technology brought about widespread layoffs across many industries throughout California which led to decreased economic activity throughout Porterville However over time there has been steady growth back into business with new housing developments being built along First Street near Interstate 5

The population was 492 at the 2010 census. The first coffee beans were grown in or around Porterville in 1859 by Nicholas Proctor. In 1872, Charles Goodyear and his brother George Goodyear founded Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company here in Porterville. The company grew rapidly until it merged with Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in 1912 to become Firestone-Goodyear Corporation. In 1923, the City of Porterville passed an ordinance limiting parking on Main Street to three cars per hour from 6AM to 10PM during business hours. This ordinance remains current today as part of the downtown Commercial District zoning plan which protects both commercial and cultural heritage properties within its boundaries. On October 16, 1930, the first Starbucks Coffee opened its doors in Contra Costa County when founder Ron Burkle decided to open a small shop near Highway 408 for customers who could not reach his original store located on Piedmont Avenue in Walnut Creek. Worth and his wife Anna Porter as part of Rancho San Pablo Mexican land grant that also included present-day Oakland and Emeryville. In 1851, Worth sold Rancho San Pablo to David Waddell for $10,000 Worth died in 1850 leaving Anna pregnant with their first child. On October 6th 1850 at the age of 25 years old Anna gave birth to her son George Washington Worth which made her the first woman ever to give birth in California. Anna had named her baby after General George Washington who had come down from Boston to help free California during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1852 when it was becoming apparent that the goldfields in Northern California were not going to pan out as expected, Captain John G. Worth decided to sell his interest in Rancho San Pablo back to David Waddell for $15,000 This made him one of the wealthiest men in America at that time according to some sources .
