Maga Coffee was founded in Porterville, California in 1971. Maga Coffee is a family-owned and operated business that has been serving the community for more than 40 years. In addition to its coffee, Maga also sells products related to the coffee industry such as bags, grinders, capsules, and syrups. Maga Coffee grew out of an idea by founder Jerry Maga Jr. He wanted to create a local option for his customers who were looking for good quality coffee without having to travel far. Jerry's wife Ginny started working at the business in 1976 and would continue working until her death in 2001. Jerry passed away in 2000 and his sonJerry Jr. took over operations of the business until he died in 2006. Today, Jerry's widow Ginny's children Ricki and Jason run the business with help from their mother Joanne. Ricki Maga is currently the proprietor of Maga Coffee where she has been running it since 2005. She previously worked at Starbucks before joining Maga Coffee full time in 2005. Ricki is originally from Illinois but has lived in Porterville since 2004 and works part-time at the shop while attending college full time. Porterville is a town in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 6,816 at the 2010 census. Porterville is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and is bordered by Yucca Valley to the south, Nevada City to the east, and Lancaster to the north. The townsite was named for Captain George Washington Porter in 1859 after he discovered an oasis there while exploring southern California. The first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Porterville in 1853. They were prospectors led by John Butterfield. In 1863, Major General Ulysses S. Grant established Fort Reno here as part of his strategy to protect southeastern Californias Railroad network during the American Civil War. For a time it played an important role as a supply depot for Confederate forces fighting in Northern California and elsewhere across the state line but it closed down in 1865 when Union forces took over most of California (the fort still stands today). In 1875, one of John Muir's sons settled here with his family after being discharged from military service in Oregon; they became known as "The Muirs". After years of debate about whether or not to make Porterville its own city, voters approved incorporation on November 3rd, 1912. The city charter was ratified on December 12th of that year. During World War II many residents moved into nearby Yucca Valley because their farms were requisitioned for use as weapons dumps or ammunition production facilities; however most residents returned home after hostilities ended. Porterville experienced significant growth during post-war decades; its population reached 10,000 by 1950 and 14,500 by 1970 census figures。 It has since fallen back below 7 thousand annually but remains a large enough community for local government services including water and fire protection and public education through School District 210 (). A new high school opened in Porterville in 2006 followed by another elementary school which opened this fall Joint Base Lewis-McChord AFB West Campus ().
