Porterville is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,917 at the 2010 census. Porterville is the county seat of Kern County. It was founded by American settlers in 1849 and named for General George Armstrong Custer. The first post office in Porterville was established on December 20, 1849. The town became a Modoc Indian Agency in 1850 when it was part of the Bear River District under the jurisdiction of Chief Joseph and his band of Othello Creeks Indians. In 1863, after the US Civil War ended, Porterville became part of California because Mexico ceded all its land east of the Niles River to become parts of California. At that time, only men could own property in California; women were not allowed to vote or hold property until they married male citizens. In 1865–1866, as Californios moved into what is now Porterville from outlying areas following their incorporation as a city within California’s new state system, some Native Americans living near the present-day city burned down several Adobe Walls Adobe settlements dating back to pre-contact times because they believed white people were coming to take away their land and sell it to foreigners or developers. This conflict increased when Anglo-American residents began building homes on pre-incorporated tribal lands adjacent to Porterville proper beginning in earnest around 1900; many native families who had been forced off their ancestral homelands during this period lost everything they owned when their properties were taken over by squatters or converted into housing developments such as Vinegar Hill Court Apartments (now known as Parkview Tower). On May 10, 1906 – two years after Mexican Independence Day – President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order No. 9075 which banned discrimination against Mexicans living within any US territory with exceptions made for military service members and those engaged in natural resources exploration and production operations authorized by Congress pursuant to Section 5(a) ofPublic Law 80-565 (42 Statutes at Large 892). As a result of this order (and other similar measures), many Mexican immigrants who had settled throughout Southern California since before America’s founding largely disappeared from view except for scattered cases such as that experienced by José Ortega y Gasset during his early days working on Los Angeles Harbor One significant development resulting from these events was the establishment of San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church outside Portervil
