Porterville is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census. Porterville is located on the San Joaquin River, north of Bakersfield. It is part of the Bakersfield–Delano–Porterville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Porterville were Mormons who arrived in 1847 and founded a small Mormon settlement near present-day Rancho Palos Verdes. They soon abandoned their new location when they learned of Indian raids nearby. In 1859, Captain George Cushing and his men commandeered a boat from a local rancher named John Leland to take them to Porterville for supplies. When they landed at the site now known as Porter Avenue, the teamsters found an empty lot with trees and brush waiting for them. They built their first house on this spot on November 14, 1859. In 1870, John Atherton established what became Atherton Normal School (now Southern California University) in Porterville after purchasing land from Captn Geo Cushing for $1 per acre (4¢ per foot). The school grew rapidly and by 1893 had developed into one of the largest public schools in Southern California with over 400 students enrolled grades 7 through 12. By 1907 Atherton had become one of two colleges in Kern County; other institutions were Centralia Seminary and Northern Californian College (later Cal State Fullerton). The town was named after Porter's nephew, Uriah G. Porter. George Porter first bought land east of town on what is now Tower Road, and built a cabin there in 1887. He later built a house on the same property which served as the first school in Porterville. In 1915, he donated the building that now houses the Central School District to the community for use as an education center until it was replaced by a new elementary school in 1972. In 1951, Mayor Julius Ewing dedicated the new courthouse to honors members of local service who have made an impact on their hometown since its founding including Judge John Saileder (1921-2005), Mrs. Ada Wolk (1925-2006) and Dr. Harry Hirschman (1945-present). The cornerstone for this structure was laid by Mayor Ewing on November 20, 1951 and it opened to the public on December 2nd of that year.
