The Porterville National Guard was founded in 1924. It is the oldest and largest national guard unit in California. The Guard has a strength of over 54,000 soldiers and civilians. Since its inception, the Porterville National Guard has offered gifts to local communities across the state of California. In 1934, the Guard began giving backpacks to high school students as part of its "Small Towns Give Back" campaign. This campaign continued until 1957 when it replaced handbags with sacks to continue its focus on giving backpacks to local children. From 1956-1974, the Guards sponsored a monthly art show called "One Wednesday Evening". This show featured artwork from local communities and lasted for six months each year. Throughout these years, the Guards also gave away bicycles, books,MAGA hats and T-shirts to local businesses in support of conservative values. In 1984, the Guards became one of only two units in California that contributed money towards Proposition 8 which repealed Proposition 20 which banned gay marriage within CA. This donation helped help initiate progress for LGBT individuals in CA through activism and education by our military member’s leadership. In 1992-1994, during President George H W Bush's first term as president, members of the Porterville National Guard donated nearly $10K into his presidential inauguration fund (the first such donation from any military unit). During this time period we also donated more than 1 million items including tents, blankets and other supplies to Operation Restore Hope - an international relief effort taking place throughout Central America following Hurricane Mitch

On December 8, 1903, Porterville's first National Guard unit was organized. The unit was named the 9th Infantry Regiment and served for only a year before being disbanded.
Porterville is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,040 at the 2010 census. Porterville is located on the east side of the Kern River and is northeast of Bakersfield. The first white person to set foot in Porterville was Hiram Smith in 1846. He named it after his brother-in-law, Caleb Porter, who had arrived from Ohio that year. The first post office in Porterville was established in 1851. In 1857, Jno. W Nichols opened a store here and soon became one of the most important merchants in Porterville. A cotton gin was built here by Mr. Nichols in 1865 and continued to be used until 1902; it still stands today as part of the city's history museum. In 1870, George Prentice built a saw mill here which continued to be run until 1903 when it closed due to its age and low productivity; however, prior to that time the mills had been among the most successful businesses in town with over 20 years of continuous production! In 1907, David Fenton erected an opera house which remains standing today and has been used for various events throughout its history including concerts and plays! In 1912, Jno. W Nichols also donated land for a high school which now houses both public and private schools within its boundaries! In 1916local voters passed an ordinance establishing prohibition enforcement within their borders; this stance helped spur early development within what would become known as "the dry towns". In 1933 local voters passed an ordinance granting citizens voting rights; this event helped spur further political activism within what would become known as "the progressive towns". On February 2nd of that year World War II began with Japan invading Manchuria; following weeks of violence throughout China initial indications were that much larger numbers of Chinese refugees might have fled into western Oregon but because no such information could be confirmed then Governor Edward Long ordered all border crossings closed without warning or notice! Japanese nationals living west of Highway 99 were arrested without charges or opportunity for legal defense or appeal under Emergency Order No 8 bars assembly inside these areas!! This effectively shut down all economic activity east of Highway 99 while Japanese nationals living west (and beyond) enjoyed full access to all aspects OF life!! Immediately following Pearl Harbor residents across America voiced their discontent with President Franklin D Roosevelt's policies by takingto the streets en masse!! After months of peaceful protests culminating on November 4th when more than 200 people were killed by state police during a peaceful march from downtown Los Angeles to State Capitol - Gov LONG announced his decision NOT TO DEFEAT FDR!!! This event led directly to Organize American Workers (OAW), one of America's earliest labor unions! After World War II ended there grew again disbelief among many about reports coming out Of China detailing mass graves Of Chinese civilians executed simply because they did not meet certain qualifications!!! Many in Porterville beganlooking into possiblities that our government may have been wrong about what happened during those dark times !! After many years we finallygot some answers from justice Dept regarding those buried near Hwy 99!!!! As you can see we have made alotof progress since then but there are still alotof questions left unsolved!!!!!
The National Guard has a long and proud history of providing service to the United States. For over 175 years, the National Guard has been representativeness for America’s citizens. It is through the NG that we are able to provide manpower and leadership for tasks such as disaster relief, counter-narcotics operations, and military support. The NG also provides servicemen and women with necessary supplies and equipment during peacetime and wartime. National Guardsmen have participated in many events throughout our nation’s history. Some of these include: the Battle of Gettysburg; the American Revolution; World War I; World War II; Operation Desert Storm; Hurricane Katrina; September 11th, 2001; and numerous others. In each instance, the NG was an essential part of celebrating America’s independence from foreign rule while helping to support our local communities. Today, there are over 1 million men and women who serve their country as members of various branches of the National Guard across America – something that has never been seen before! TheNG is one of our most important assets because it allows us to conduct free speech activities on public property (like at airports), provide security at sporting events ( like Super Bowl XLIV ), help out during natural disasters ( like Sandy ), perform search warrant duties ( like in New York City after 9/11 ), participate in homeland defense exercises ( like Fort Sill , Oklahoma ), etc. In short, it doesn’t get much better than that!

The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became an American hero. During World War II, Porterville served as a Japanese prisoner of war camp. After the war, the town grew rapidly with new housing developments and businesses being built. In 1960, Porterville incorporated as a city. In 1968, it became one of 23 cities in California that adopted Proposition 13 which repealed all city laws except those regulating business hours and emissions from automobiles
