The Porterville Naval Base is home to the USS Porter (CVN 78) and the USS Roosevelt (CVN 73). The Roosevelt was redesignated as a CVN 78 in 2006. The Porterville Naval Base has been hosting naval deployments since 1951. In 1946, the United States commissioned USS Porter (CVN 78) as part of Operation Crossroads. The purpose of this deployment was to provide training for navies of allied nations in how to operate together in wartime. After World War II, America's Navy began an expansion that would see it grow from 1,500 sailors to over 34,000 by 1969. USS Porter served during the Vietnam War and conducted operations off the coast of South Vietnam. The Nixon administration decided not to deploy more warships into Southeast Asia due to budgetary limitations. However, a new navy was formed which would eventually become known as Operation Neptune's Spear-the first major war fought on American soil since World War II with no U.S. combat fatalities*. USS Roosevelt served during our conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq - both times providing support for Operation Enduring Freedom*. In 2007, President George W Bush approved the use of CVN 78 forOperation Neptune's Spear-the largest amphibious assault ever mounted on American soil* Citing problems with its aging exteriors and limited storage capacity*, Admiral John Richardson immediately orderedVSQ-19(L)-class submarines delivered instead which would be used for seagoing patrols off Somalia.* These deployments gave many people their first opportunity to see or interact with a nuclear submarine when they visited Norfolk Virginia*! Puget Sound Naval Shipyard completed renovations which allowed CVN 78 increased usage by adding 12 berths *and increasing her operational range from 5 nautical miles at 4 knots down to 50 nautical miles at 7 knots! With these additions, she became one of only two nuclear submarines currently serving in our fleet*! She also helped make possible sea trials for future Jane's Fighting Ships program ships** This project would lead directly to the construction of USS Enterprise (CVN 64), America's newest nuclear warship!

A post office was established in 1877, and a flour mill was built in 1880. The town name came from John Porter, who donated land for the town's foundation. In 1903, construction began on what would become University Park Elementary School; it opened in 1904. In 1951, Porterville became an incorporated city and voted to adopt a new constitution which provided for open enrollment at all schools within city limits without prior approval from school board members or parents/guardians. In 1990, University Park Elementary School closed after 35 years of operation and Bechtel siblings Donny and Sandy McCombs took over operations as students continued to attend classes there through ninth grade until 2003 when they discontinued operations due to budget cuts by then-Mayor Jerry Sanders (D). Bechtel assumed ownership of the building once it closed with plans to reopen it as a community center someday but that never happened Porterville has seen growth over recent decades thanks to its proximity to Bakersfield and its growing economy based primarily on agriculture including almonds, wheat, cornmeal, cottonseed oil production and other feed crops such as hay and sorghum . The first post office in Porterville was established in 1885. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Butterfield and Stockton Railroad lines and its access to water from the Sacramento River. In 1925, Porterville became an incorporated city with a population of 27,000 people. However, it struggled during the Great Depression and World War II eras due to lack of jobs and inadequate housing. In 1951, Porterville merged with neighboring Stockton to form a new city with a population of 100,000 people. In recent years, Porterville has become an important center for agriculture with its own local dairy and eggs production as well as food processing businesses including but not limited to: Jardin Foods Inc., Cottage Cheese America Inc., Golden Corral Mexican Restaurants Inc., Parma Farms Inc., First National Bank - China Grocery & Cafe (now Panda Express), Food Lion Corporation and Postmates LLC.. Today's downtown is home to many small businesses as well as two churches; First Baptist Church-Porter Valley and Second Christian Church-Stockton/Mountain View.
