In 1890, the Porters relocated to what is now downtown Porterville and began trading goods they collected from the surrounding hillsides for goods sent downriver to meet railroads in San Francisco. In 1906, when California became leading during World War I as an ally of Germany,[1] Porterville's status declined because it did not support the war effort. The history of wine production in Porterville starts with winemaking demonstrations by local farmers who planted grapevines near what is now downtown in 1887. This led to the founding of First American Wines Co., Ltd., one of first white-owned vineyards in Kern County (now part of Bakersfield). At first grapes were shipped downriver from Mendocino County where winemaking was done using open cask storage methods before barrel aging began in 1905; this process produced better wines that were sampled throughout Northern California before being exported to Europe and other parts of the world. After their victory at Little Bighorn over the Indians in March 1876, many American troops traveled through Canada to refill their ranks and rendezvous with General Custer at Fort McDowell near Tucson before returning home on April 10th. This group numbered over one hundred men strong - some historians have claimed that even more soldiers may have accompanied General Custer than are officially recognized due to lack of documentation or verification.
