Poway was founded in 1852 as a small ranch by José Antonio Mora and his brother, Manuel. In 1870, the Moras granted land to the town of Poway on the southern bank of the San Dieguito River. The first stores were opened in 1872, and a post office was established in 1875. The population grew rapidly from a few hundred residents in 1870 to over 1,000 by 1900. Manufacturing began to grow after World War I, and Poway became one of California's leading industrial cities. Afterward,ependency developed as Poway declined into an agricultural center during the 1930s and 1940s; however, recent economic growth has led to renewed development in Poway.
