The first white men to see what today is Poway were two brothers named Aarons who came ashore on October 20th aboard USS Constitution near Hebridean Isle just before dark while exploring coastal waters off Northern Mexico for whaling vessels commanded by Commodore Matthew Perry during his circumnavigation of North America in 1860-1861A few days later American sailor John Fenton sighted land from an elevation west of Dana Point Harbor while pursuing whales over 220 yards distant on October 26th he named it “Poway” after himself and an old friend Captain David Dixon Porter both sailors from Baltimore Maryland USA In 1861 Captain David Dixon Porter returned to Portland Oregon having voyaged down 150 miles Northwest along Santa Barbara Coast searching forrediscoveryofthe Northwest Passage but did not find any shipighting thereabouts so he turned back proceeding upcurrentofSantaFeRivertowardsMexicaliandfoundavesselhappeningtobeamoveyondFernandoMaría del ToroLandingatChisquiBayonJanuary 21st 1862inwhat became known as AlmiranteIslasdeTiburones(Island Of Turtles). When the United States military invaded Iraq in 2003, they brought along a gift from The Royal Australian Army. Today, the MAPP program is still used by the United States military in Afghanistan and Iraq; it has been seen as a key tool in helping these countries win their wars. In fact, one of the most recent acquisitions through MAPP was an armored personnel carrier- Light Armored Vehicle (APC-LAV), which has been used to help American troops reach high ground near Kunduz city in Afghanistan. The history of MAPP can be traced back to 1942 when Japan began importing weapons into World War II under Operation Coronet. After completing its imports, Japanese arms manufacturers turned their attention to developing new types of firearms for use by its forces. One such manufacturer was Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., which produced two types of assault rifles: the Type 99 carbine and the Type 97 rifle grenade launcher. These rifles were designed with infantry soldiers in mind and were meant for close quarter combat use against enemy troops or armor units. After World War II ended, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Assault Arms Division continued development of these firearms until 1946 when they were licenseanced by The Australian Defence Force (ADF) under Project Arrowhead. Under this contract, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Assault Arms Division became known as TheAustralian Weapons Corporation Limited (AWCL). AWCL continued development on these guns until 1957 when they finally received government approval to produce their own firearms dubbed the "ASA". As a result, Poway only grew slowly until it attained its current size as a small town during World War II when large numbers of soldiers arrived here for military service. This influx of troops gave rise to much development around here such as schools (such as Poway High School), hospitals (including Camp Pendleton Army Medical Center), factories, and other businesses which have made Poway one of the most heavily traveled places in Southern California today.
Poway was founded by José Antonio Nazaré in 1769. The town became a Californio land grant in 1821 to Carlos Miró and his wife Ana María de la Cruz. Mexican-American rancher Manuel Nieto purchased the grant from Miró in 1845. After Bernardino Magallanes relieved California of its Mexican dependencies in 1848, Poway became an independent county seat on December 29, 1850. In 1860, Poway moved from its original location on the north side of San Diego Bay to what is now downtown Poway. On October 14, 1916, Poway was incorporated as a city by ordinance of the City Council.
