Poway was founded on the site of an agricultural mission, San Diego Missions Presidio and Mission San José. The area now known as Poway is named after Francisco Peralta, a Spanish soldier and explorer who explored the region in 1821. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Poway was made by Juan Bautista Alvarado in 1769. In 1821, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna appointed Peralta governor of California. After defeating Mexican troops at the Battle of Cahuenga Pass, Peralta declared Californy independent from Mexico. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), American forces advanced through California and destroyed all but a small portion of the Mexican army at the Battle of Monterrey. On November 3, 1850, after Mexico gained its independence from Spain, General Mariano Diaz ordered all military stores to be burned in Pomona because he believed that Mexicans would not return to their former lands if they had access to arms and ammunition. Many people fled or were forced out of California when this happened.
