The first Europeans to come to the area were José Garza and Marcos Vallejo who landed on shore at what is now known as Poway Beach in 1846. The name "Poway" was given by Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla, commandant of San Diego in 1785. The first post office was established at Poway in 1872. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, the area became part of Mexico and experienced various persecutions by American troops. On November 15, 1848, Los Angeles County was created from parts of San Diego and Orange counties. In 1850, Poway Cove became part of the newly formed town of La Jolla when it split off from Rancho Viejo. On January 10, 1860, Poway was incorporated as a village with a population of 100 people under the leadership of John Cranch Waddell. By 1870 there were 4 businesses operating within the limits of present-day Poway: an bakery and grocery store owned by Elias Howe; two whaling ships that operated outfitting sailors stationed at Point Loma; and a hotel/inn run by Fanny Calderon Mariscal which also served as a school for children near Point Loma after Mrs. Calderon's death in 1863 (the Mariscal School opened in 1865). In 1905 Pacific Electric Railway built its line through Poway Village providing transportation for residents to jobs on La Jolla Peninsula or points north along the line (now Amtrak's Coaststar terminal). In 1916 Federal troops burned down several homes during an altercation with local citizens over cigarette smoking outside one such home; this series of events led to increased law enforcement measures against drug use within the community until well into the 1990s (UCLA history museum pamphlet No 1). As industrial production decreased throughout much of California following World War II (and especially during 1949-1953), economic conditions began to improve for many residents within powaya vicinity beginning around 1960 although some remained marginalized due primarily to limited access to education, employment opportunities and affordable housing stock relative to surrounding areas (UCLA history museum pamphlet No 2). More recently there has been increasing development including high density residential housing developments adjacent directly or indirectly to major freeways making powaya increasingly accessible despite relatively low crime rates relative thereto - something which is particularly noticeable around nightlife venues like Live Nation's Sahara Theatre or Decatur Street nightclubs located near Interstate 5 Exit 134A just minutes' walk away from downtown powaya)
Poway was founded in 1848 by Rancho Guadalupe Mexican land grantee José Antonio Mejía. The town's name comes from the nearby Pajaro River. The first post office was established in 1849. Poway became a city on January 1, 1959, when it merged with neighboring San Marcos and Carlsbad to form the new City of San Marcos.
