Captain Dixon and his wife were the first owners of the town. The townsite was named after General David Dixon who fought in the Mexican-American War. General Dixon donated land to the town for a cemetery that is still in use today. In 1865, Poway became an incorporated village with a population of 100 people. On July 15, 1889, Poway received its charter as a city with a population of 519 people. On November 3, 1924 Poway lost its charter as a city and became an unincorporated rural community with a population of just 12 people

The first white settler in Poway was John Huggins, who arrived in May 1847 from Illinois. In 1870, Poway became a county seat and began to be known as the "Gateway City." By 1900, it had a population of 507 people. During World War II, Poway played an important role as an airfield and naval base for California's military forces. After the war ended, poways growth slowed but never stopped; by 2000 it had a population of 695 people. The current name of Poway comes from Juan Bautista Alvarado (15 October 1784 – 27 January 1861), also known as General Pedro Bohívar y Buenaventura who served during Californias Mexican War (1846-1848), who fought at Cerro Gordo and Monterrey against royalist insurgents under Maximilian I of Mexico City; he is best remembered for his victory over Francisco Lara at Buena Vista Hill on 11 November 1849 during the Mexican-American Wars (1846-1848). He also received promotion to generalmajor general after this victory.
