Poway is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. Poway is located on the site of Mission Viejo and was founded by American missionaries in 1821. The population was 21,711 as of 2018. The first people to live in Poway were the Ohlone people who arrived from Northern California about 12,000 years ago. The Ohlone traded with the Chumash and other Native Americans. In 1821, American missionary George Smith founded Mission San Francisco de Asís here. After Mexican independence came into force in 1848, Englishman John Cascadden established a mission at Coyote Hills (now part of East San Diego). In 1853 Spanish explorer José Antonio Lara explored and discovered San Miguel Island while sailing for the Spanish navy; he named it Isla de los Padres Católicos after his father – Pope Pius VII – and reported this discovery to Captain James Cook aboard HMS Resolution. Mission San Francisco de Asís had been abandoned by 1855 because of lack of funds; however, its ruins still stand today as one of Poway’s most notable landmarks. In 1886 an electric light company was started in Poway by banker Thomas Edison and entrepreneur Samuel Insull with financial support from Governor Hiram Johnson (who also donated land for the company’s headquarters). Edison built his experimental plant on North First Street near what is now Del Mar Boulevard; when it became operational, Poway had become one of America’s earliest cities with electric lights. The majority of Poway's built up areas are located on or near Proctor Avenue SE between 2nd Street and 3rd Street. This area is home to many small businesses as well as public schools such as Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School District #3 which serves students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade; St Bede High School which serves students from 9th through 12th grades; and Poway Middle School whichserves students from 7th through 8th grades.
