Military deployments have a long history in Poway, California. The city is home to the largest military installation in Southern California, Naval Base San Diego. The naval base has been a site of conflict and peace since it opened in 1875. The city also played a role in the development of the United States Armed Forces. The first military deployment occurred on October 15, 1875 when Commodore John D. Stockton's American Squadron sailed into San Diego Harbor with supplies for Mexican soldiers during the Pancho Villa Expedition. The squadron was commanded by Lieutenant Commander George Armstrong Custer and lasted only two days before sailing back out of San Diego Harbor without any supplies or passengers. The first permanent US military presence in Poway was at Fort Point Barrington on December 1, 1876 when Major General James Fenton arrived with his 3rd Infantry Regiment to suppress Native American resistance near Rialto Creek. In 1889, Mayor Lorenzo Ferrall served as Commanding Officer of Ft Hood Army Depot which gave Poway an important foothold within the growing US Military establishment throughout California. In 1898 during World War I, Fort Point Barrington became home to Camp Kearny where over 2,000 Marines from various units combatted against an estimated 100,000 Japanese troops across three weeks of violence and combat that left more than 350 dead and over 1,500 wounded or missing according to official records. "Poway became an important player in the early years of World War I thanks to its location just south of Camp Kearny – one mile wide between Morse Street on one side and Fourth Street on the other." These actions led to increased tension between Poway residents and Marines who were stationed at Fort Point Barrington; this tension eventually boiled over into open warfare when Marine barracks were set up on residential streets adjacent to schools in 1917-1918%. This event is considered one of most significant moments in local history as it marked the beginning of what would become known as "the Battle for Poway". As tensions continued to mount between Marines and civilians both inside and outside OFT Bay City proper (which included most of downtown), efforts began within Navy Headquarters at Quantico Virginia Beach (now Arlington National Cemetery) led by Admiral Halsey (later Chief Fleet Sea Lord) to provide some form of relief or mitigation strategy for events unfolding outside our shores - ultimately leading to Operation Crossroads which ended Japanese forces occupying Okinawa Island

In 1915, after World War I ended, General Electric set up its plant on 3 acres at present-day Diridon Boulevard and Highway 19 near Lemelson Drive east of Interstate 805 between Pomona and Claremont Colleges; production continued until 1957 at that location with some jobs moving to nearby Huntington Beach during that time period because growth there prohibited GE from expanding into eastern Riverside County where it would have interfered with local businesses such as Proctor & Gamble Co., Loews Inc., Kaiser Aluminum Co., Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), Wells Fargo & Company (WFC) and Southern California Edison Company (SCE). However industrial development did occur adjacent to Qualcomm Stadium through other means including Ford Motor Company’s El Cajon Assembly Plant which began operations on October 1st 1946 prior to Henry Ford’s death on August 14th that year; successor company Wayne Trucking Corporation started operations at what is now Northridge Park Plaza Shopping Center next door on November 15th 1947 making this site one of only two shopping centers west of Interstate 5 open for business during those early years following World War II without tolls or other forms of surcharge authority typical within many Western states during that time period due primarily to restrictions placed upon interstate commerce by federal authorities pursuant to provisions contained within Title 6 U.S.C § 203(a) authorizing government owned corporations like GE/NBC Owned Television Stations Incorporated “the network service provider” under contract with CBS Corporation) after passage thereof through both Housesof Congress following presidential Executive Order 12988 dated December 15th ,1947 - thus concluding over 50 years since original establishment of this facility located currently just north side intersection Diridon Boulevard/Highway 19 opposite University Avenue south side along Tecate Parkway across street from current day Dowling Elementary School - thereafter becoming known popularly simply as "Quad" or "GTE."
