Poway National Guard units have been present in the area since the early 1800s. In 1844, a detachment of soldiers from San Diego County was sent to garrison nearby Yuma during the Mexican-American War. The unit did not remain on active duty for very long, being disbanded in 1845. However, a few years later, another detachment was raised in Poway and assigned to guarding cattle pastures near Twentynine Palms. The unit remained operational until 1898 when it was replaced by the county's first military police force.

On July 12, 1907 a fire destroyed much of downtown Poway but no one was injured because most of the buildings had been built without permits that year by developer Charles Fenton who later became mayor of San Diego In 1911–12 more than 100 businesses sat idle as developers refused To renew leases due to an increase in prohibition laws passed by President William Howard Taft during his first term as president. The townspeople organized themselves into a Citizens' Committee led by Mayor Drysdale and successfully appealed for statehood on February 3rd 1912 becoming part of California when it won its independence from Mexico two days later On September 9th 1915 US Marines Landingcraft drove Japanese commandos out of Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station ending World War II while marines used Marine airfields adjacent to Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station until 1945 when all landings were discontinued due to bombing raids over Japan .A small naval air station continued operation until 1942 called Kite Island Naval Air Station operated by Marine Aircraft Squadron ( VMF ) 231 operating Curtiss P-40N Fighter aircraft with Major Harry Sperry as Commandant during 1942 through 1945

In 1861, the Guardsmen were again divided into infantry and artillery sections. Each section was then organized into brigades, which served as units for training and drill. The individual brigade commanders also led their troops in battle when needed. On May 5, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln disbanded the National Guard after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina while it was under federal jurisdiction. In 1936, Congress passed a law providing for the activation of the National Guard if there is a threat to public safety during an emergency such as a pandemic or depression. The whole purpose behind this law was to provide support to state governors should they choose to use the Guardsmen in order to keep people safe during these times of crisis. In 1912, Poway was incorporated as a city by an act of the California Legislature following passage of Proposition 8 which declared all marriages between citizens of same-sex unions or any marriage not sanctioned by state law to be null and void. On November 3, 1916, during World War I veteran's commemorative parade through Poway streets honoring all servicemen and women who had served since 1914 or earlier—the largest such parade ever held in San Diego—the "Poway Patrol" led by Mayor Harry Hennessey removed veterans' medals from cars and distributed them free to everyone participating. It was also Homecoming Weekend for many high school students living near campus during that year's school yearbook photo session; some 10 photographers took pictures inside each grade level locker room at Mater Dei High School while Classes were In Session!
