The San Diego Navy Yard was founded in 1885 by Commodore John W. Richardson as the Naval Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Theyard produced more than 100 warships during its peak, including USS Constitution (1797), USS Maine (1854), USS Perry (1855), USS Dahlgren (1881), and USS Porter (1910). In 1941, the yard merged with the Imperial Japanese Navy to form the Imperial Japanese Navy dockyards. The yards continued production of warships until 1945, when they were transferred to the United States Army Corps of Engineers for use in World War II. After the war, the yards reverted to their original name and ceased operations in 1962. Today, naval ships remain at San Diego Naval Shipyard where they are repaired or built anew. Poway is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 77,391 at the 2000 census. Poway was founded in 1907 by George and Florence Olson. Poway became an incorporated city in 1959. It is located on the edge of Imperial Valley between Petco Park to the north and Solana Beach to the south. TheOlson family name has been associated with Poway for more than 100 years. George Olson settled here in 1907 after moving from Minneapolis, Minnesota and starting a lumber company with his brother-in-law Gustavus Swanwick. The Olsons named their new town after their paternal grandfather, David Poway who had died shortly before they arrived in America from Sweden. David's father, John Poway had immigrated to North America in 1847 and settled in what is now Riverside County, California near present day Fontana Junction; he started a cattle ranch that produced woolen fabrics for Northern China's courts during the late 19th century.David's son Johnathan also settled Hereabouts soon after arriving (1892)and started a dry goods store & post office which served as the nucleus of today's business community including 3 gas stations (Allstate, Chevron & Pacific Coast), 2 insurance companies (& First American Insurance Company), 1 hardware store (Fenton Hardware), 3 restaurants (Canton Steakhouse, Old Cowhands Cafe & The Chinese Garden) & one movie theater which screens Western Movies at various locations around town until it closed its doors circa 1975 due to financial difficulties brought on by oil exploration developments within driving distance! Today there are still some remnants of this pre-oil era community when you enter downtown from CA State Route 101 following US 69 past Fenton Hardware onto Main Street whereupon you will cross over into residential streets of newer homes built since then! After crossing Heckscher Way/ FM 965 just south of downtown off Caltrans Road 1116 you will reach your final stop on this side of town - "The Girdle" - formerly known as "The Two Towers" housing development currently managed by Lennar Development Group! Poway is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 103,675 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Diego County and has been the largest city in Orange County since its incorporation as a municipality on January 1, 1907. Poway was first settled by Native Americans who called it "Barney Station." The town's name may come from Juan Barney, one of six men who explored Rancho de la Paloma in 1839. Spanish explorer José Francisco Vallejo named the area La Jolla because Captain James Cook stopped there on his ill-fated voyage of discovery in 1778. In 1851, Poway residents bought 20 acres (8 ha) of land north of what is now Interstate 5 to create a new town site. They named their new town San Dieguito after General Miguel Avila Camacho, who had led Mexican forces against United States forces during the Alamo Rebellion and Battle of Adobe Walls. In 1872 local farmers founded an agricultural colony that became Poway City Limits while still part of San Dieguito; this colony began to decline following Californias entry into World War II and especially during the McCarthy era when political witch hunts were conducted throughout the state against Communists. However, Poway City Limits kept growing until they reached their current size by 1990 due to annexation of various unincorporated areas within present-day Poway and Mission Hills by other municipalities over that same period
