The Air Force has a rich history in Rancho Cordova, CA. The first airfield in the area was built here in 1941 and was used for training pilots and ground crews for the USAAAF during World War II. In 1949, the USAF activated its own airbase here and it became an important stop on bomber routes between the US and Europe. The base saw heavy use during the Cold War, with many NATO allies using it to launch missiles at Russian targets. After the Cold War ended, rancho cordova AFB slowly declined in importance until it was closed in 1996. However, since then, interest in preserving this facility has grown as more people learn about its history. Today, there are plans to reopen rancho cordova AFB as a research and development center for new aviation technology. In 1941, when Rancho Cordova was developed as part of Project Chanute by United States Army Corps of Engineers Director General James H J Pringle Jr., one of his goals was to create an airfield that could be used by both fighter bombers and transports aircraft for operations over North America. Chanute Field opened on October 3rd of that year and quickly proved itself as a major asset to USAAF forces operating in Southwestern California during World War II; during its first year of operation,Chanute housed Fifteen P-40 " Mustang" fighters from 5th Fighter Squadron (Fighter) #14 at Burbank Airport while other squadrons moved into other fields throughout southern California. Chanute also played an important role during Desert Storm when three fighter wings from Arizona were deployed here including wingman Wendell Corey who flew combat missions against Iraqi tanks near Baghdad airport on April 18th 1991; after Desert Storm ended these wings were disbanded but their memories live on through numerous scholarships awarded annually to desert storm veterans at Valley Nazarene University near Phoenix Arizona). Today open hangar space is still available at Chanute which can host any type of military aircraft or helicopter activity; however due to Fire Code issues associated with recent fires within the perimeter fence some large Aircraft Storage Areas have been closed off temporarily while work is being done on relocating them closer to fire hydrants so they don't require construction permits which have caused some long term annoyance among residents living close by!

In 1865, when Sutter moved his operations to Yuba City due to public outcry over cruelty on his ranches east of Sacramento, he sold Ranchera to James Brougham for $1 million dollars which made Rancho Cordova one of the largest cattle drives in California history. After Brougham died in 1875, it passed through a series of owners until it came into private hands again under David Waddell who donated it to the State of California in 1907 for use as an agricultural research center known as Waddell Ranch National Monument.
Rancho Cordova was founded in 1847 by Don José Manuel Nieto and his wife, María de la Concepción Bautista. The original land was a part of Rancho Rinconada. Nieto sold the ranch to John Sutter in 1855 for $10,000. In 1865, California became a state and Sutter donated the remaining land to the University of California at Berkeley. In 1872, ownership changed hands again when Charles W. Post bought the ranch from Sutter for $40,000. The Post family ran it until 1984 when it passed into the hands of their son Dean Post and his wife Jane Hardenquist Post. The main campus of UC Berkeley is located on portions of the Rancho Cordova property which are now part of UC Santa Cruz campus.
