In 1849, the California Gold Rush began in the area that is now Rancho Cordova. The town of Cordova was founded on November 10th, 1849 by General Mariano Vallejo and his men as a stop on their trip to prospect for gold in what is now Nevada. In 1850, the Mexican government granted rancho borders to American settlers in an effort to keep them from settling in California. The first permanent residents were United States citizens who named themselves the "Cordova Party" after their hometown. One of these Americans was James Waddell who settled at Rancho San Miguel de la Laguna on December 17th of that year.
Rancho Cordova is located in the Santa Clara Valley of California, about seventy-five miles east of San Francisco. The ranch is situated on a high rolling hill, overlooking the valley and its many towns and villages. It was founded by Juan Manuel de Cordova in 1776 as part of the Rancho Panama grant. In 1847, Rancho Cordova became part of the Mexican land grant system and was acquired by George C. Marshall in 1853. In 1916, it was annexed to the City of San Francisco and has since been a part of that city's municipal government. The rancho consists of more than twenty-four square miles (55 square kilometers). The mainstay crops are cotton, hay, livestock and potatoes; however, there are also some fruit trees and vegetables grown hereabouts. There are several thousand head of cattle and horses grazing on over one hundred thousand acres (240 square kilometers). A tennis court, golf course, swimming pool and other recreational facilities have been added to the ranch over time.

There are over 100 buildings in Rancho Cordova, which include a courthouse, bank, post office, theater, and school. Rancho Cordova was founded in 1847 by Antonio L. Vallejo and wife, María Juana de la Cueva. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley of Pasadena, California. Rancho Cordova was a portion of the Ranchojoncita Mexican land grant given to José Maria Sánchez in 1835. The property extended from what is now North Pasadena to east to west La Canada Flintridge and included parts of Glendale, Encino and Carson City. The Vallejos sold their holdings in Rancho Cordova in 1895 to Montague Hutton, who then sold it in 1912 to Julius Rosenwald Jr., who used it as a Summer home until his death in 1937. In 1945, the name changed again when Harry Heineman bought the ranch from Rosenwald's widow and rededicated it as a public library called Los Angeles County Library District No. 1 (LACLD-1). In 1984 LACLD-1 merged with other local districts to create Los Angeles County Public Library System (LAPLS).
