Rancho Cordova was founded in 1847 by Jose Padilla and his wife, María de la Luz. The ranch stretched from the Sacramento River to the Imperial Valley and included 7,000 acres of land. The Padillas were influential figures in California history and are considered the first Europeans to establish a permanent settlement in what is now California. Rancho Cordova was an important center for agriculture, mining, and trade throughout its early years. In 1849, Jose Padilla sold his share of the ranch to John C. Fremont. Fremont set about developing it into one of the most successful ranches in California. He increased acreage, built irrigation systems, and developed farming methods that led to a high level of productivity on Rancho Cordova. In addition to his agricultural activities, Fremont also became involved in mining interests; he discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1850 and later situated a processing plant there for extracting gold Nuggets. Fremont’s tenure as owner of Rancho Cordova marked a turning point for the area; it became one of the most prosperous regions in California during this time period. After him, other prominent figures associated with Rancho Cordova include James Wolk (1853-1922), who served as treasurer during much of Fremont’s rule over the ranch; Harry Hastings (1859-1939), who succeeded Wolk as treasurer; Marion Stearns Wellman (1883-1965), who served as acting treasurer during World War I; Andres Romero (1920-2006), who served as president from 1984 until his death; and Leland Stanford Jr., son of Stanford University founder Leland Stanford Sr., who purchased part of Rancho Cordova from Wellman in 1903. In 1935, after years of negotiations between various interested parties, Leland Stanford Sr.] acquired all remaining interest in Rancho Cordova from Andres Romero for $2 million dollars. This acquisition finally ended rancid rumors that had been swirling around San Francisco sinceatorians regarding whether or not they could purchase sizable tracts adjacent to Rancho Cordoya for development into large urban neighborhoods known today as North Beach/Beachwood or South Beach/Downtown San Francisco].
The Rancho Cordova area in southeastern California was first settled by the Kumey and Lassen families in 1847. The name "Rancho Cordova" was given to the area by Spanish settlers because of the abundance of cottonwood trees in the region. The first post office in Rancho Cordova was established in 1853. In 1870, Francisco Sanchez donated land for a school and monastery on what is now our University of California, Berkeley campus. In 1898, Senator James Buchanan offered to purchase Rancho Cordova from Manuel Nieto for $10,000 cash. However, due to concerns about development within the rancho boundaries, Nieto refused to sell and instead donated the land to the university. The university has been located on this property since then.
