Rancho Cordova was founded in 1887 by George C. Smith and his brother, James A. Smith. The Rancho Cordova land grant was given to George C. Smith's father, John Sutter, in 1846. The rancho comprised 1,500 acres of land that extended from the San Joaquin River to Santa Cruz Mountains. In addition to ranching operations, the Smiths built a small mill on the riverbank and developed a small town on their property called Cordova. The first post office at Rancho Cordova was established in 1892. By 1907, the population of Cordova had grown to about 100 people and the town had become an important base for transportation and commerce within the surrounding agricultural area. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson visited Rancho Cordova and announced his intention to create an Indian reservation in southern California as part of his general plan for American Indians known as "The General Allotment." Because there were no white residents living on or near present-day Rancho cordova when this announcement was made, most of the original settlers abandoned their homes in order to move away from what they saw as government intervention into their personal lives. However, despite some initial resistance from some of these early settlers, over time many of them moved back onto the ranchos after experiencing positive changes brought about by World War I and improvements made in farming techniques during that period. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst acquired much of what remains today of Rancho Cordova with its 350-acre (160 hectare) grazing field and began developing it into one of Southern California's leading cattle ranches under the name Hearst Ranch. The Rancho Cordova land grant was given to José Antonio Vargas in 1847. The grant extended from the San Joaquin River east to the Mexican state of Baja California. In 1853, Vargas and his brother, Francisco, founded what is today known as ranchería Vargas in Rancho Cordova. From this rancho, he began managing a large area extending from present-day Fresno County to central Baja California.
