The first battle fought by Rangers during this time was on January 12th near Placerville . This event marked the beginning of Ranger activity against Apache Indians . From this point forward most engagements between Ranger companies were fought outside of town limits or along Indian trails

Rancho Cordova was founded in 1853 by John C. Fremont and his wife, María Elena de Borbón. The rancho consisted of over 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares) on the southern slope of Mount Diablo. It became a major center for cattle and sheep production, as well as a popular tourist destination, thanks to its natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle. In 1905, Rancho Cordova was purchased by George Hearst. He turned it into one of the wealthiest ranches in California with extensive vineyards and orchards. The Hearsts are famous for their elaborate gardens at their mansion on Callejon del Rio. In 1928, they donated the land that would become Riverside Park to help promote tourism in Los Angeles County. Today, Rancho Cordova is an important part of Los Angeles history and is still used for agriculture purposes. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark both because of its significance in the history of California wineproduction and because it contains some of the earliest evidence of human habitation in Southern California
Rancho Cordova was founded by Manuel Nieto in 1842. The land east of the city of Santa Clara was purchased from Mission San Francisco de Asís, and a mission chapel and livestock enclosure were built there. In 1849, the town of Cordova was founded on the south side of Rancho Cordova. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1898, the City of Santa Clara annexed Rancho Cordova to its limits.
