Rancho Cordova is located in the central San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1859 by Rancho Las Pulgas ranchers, who named it after their rancho (land) of Cordova, Spain. Today, Rancho Cordova is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 54,822 as of the 2010 census. The CDP covers an area of 9 square miles (21 km2). The post office at Rancho Cordova opened on November 3, 1861, and continued to serve until it was discontinued on July 6, 1966. The first town in Rancho Cordova was called Los Angeles; however, this name changed to Rancho Cordova in 1875 when the first post office became part of the larger City of Stockton. During World War II many people from Stockton left for work on the naval base at Monterey Bay and developed what is now Downtown Stockton. The city's biggest development during that time was major shopping center development which took place near Interstate 5 and East Olive Street between 1960 and 1970. This area now includes most of downtown Stockton and parts of Daly City as well as much housing north off I-5 near Pioneer Road east to Mission Boulevard

Rancho Cordova, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley region of southern California. The town was founded in 1887 by German-American settlers, and became a center for wine production. The area now known as Rancho Cordova was part of the Hudsons Bay Company's ranchlands that were granted to them by Spanish governor Manuel Nieto in 1769. The Hudsons Bay Company sold these lands to pioneers in 1847, and the first post office was established at Rancho Cordova in 1852. In 1863, the US Railroad built a line from Sacramento to Stockton, and this led to increased settlement of the area around Rancho Cordova. In 1868, Captain John Cushing and his party explored what is now Yosemite National Park while on their way from Stockton to Girdwood; they named the park after Cordova County,California. In 1870–71 Mexican land grants were made available for purchase by Englishman George Armstrong Clements; these grants also included portions of present-day Rancho Cordova. The community gradually grew up around itsadobe mission chapel and drinking water supply plant (later known as City Hall) until it reached its current size in 1916 when it incorporated as a city under one mayor and four council members.
