Rancho Cordova, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 5,059 at the 2010 census. It is located about 20 miles east of Fresno and 30 miles north of Stockton. Rancho Cordova was founded in 1851 by José Correa and his wife Pilarita. Rancho Cordova became a part of the United States in 1850. The first post office was established in Rancho Cordova in 1852. In 1856, John Sutter founded the Sutter's Fort Colony near present-day Sacramento, California to raise sheep and goats on what would become Rancho Sanchez de la Hoz. In 1860, when Don Fernando de Alvarado acquired title to Rancho Sanchez de la Hoz from Juan Bautista Alvarado, he named it "Rancho Cordova". In 1862, Mexican General Antonio Lopez Estrada occupied the valley while suppressing Ute chieftains who had revolted against Spanish rule; accordingly, Alvarado assigned two men to monitor ranch operations— Edward Ayer and Frederick Wilsbury—and rename his new ranch "Alvarado" after him. progresively more people started moving into cordova for agriculture because there were no other places to live until after World War II when development increased La Selva housing developments around Town square (El Camino Real) which have since leveled off with 4 blocks between them but continue to be visible from downtown through their high fences
