In the early 1900s, Rancho Cordova was a small agricultural community located in today’s San Bernardino County. The town had a population of only 100 residents when it became the site of an American coffee plantation in 1912. At first, the coffee was exported to Europe and Japan. However, because of World War I, prices plummeted and the plantation closed in 1922. In 1925, the Dutch company Ciba-Geigy bought the property and began to produce coffee beans for their own market. The popularity of California brown coffee led to another coffee plantation being developed in Rancho Cordova in 1928. This time, beans were produced for export to Europe and Japan. The plant operated until 1939 when it was destroyed by fire. However, these two plantations did not stop small batch coffee production from taking place throughout the 1920s and 1930s at one of Rancho Cordova’s many farms. The name originated with Spanish settler Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla who named it after his hometown of Noche Buena (New Year's Eve). In 1864, the United States acquired Rancho Cordova from Mexico for $5,000. In 1882, James Waugh purchased part of Rancho Los Nietos and renamed it Waughland Park. Waughland Park was later divided into several parcels and sold off until 1943 when it became part of Rancho Cordova. The largest employer in Rancho Cordova is the city of Stockton which employs over 40% of all workers in town limits alone. The town of Cordova, which developed on the east side of Rancho Cordova, was named after Anna Maria's husband, Manuel Cisneros. In 1860, the rancho was sold to J. B. Sutter and his partners for $15,000. With their new land grant and profits from business ventures such as mining and farming, the Sutter family built one of Northern California's most successful ranchers and entrepreneurs. By 1907, they had acquired over 142 acres (60 ha) of valley floor at present-day San Francisco Bay Area where they built a series of large homes including The Presidio and Adobe Palace. From their home in San Francisco until their death in 1942, they were patrons and benefactors of numerous local organizations including the United States Legionnaires orderlies battalion stationed at Fort Point prison on Golden Gate Island; Sonoma County Historical Society; Santa Clara Valley Museum; Peninsula School District #2; American Academy in Rome; First Christian Church (later known as Willow Glen Presbyterian Church); Methodist EpiscopalChurch (now Willow Glen United Methodist Church); Pacific Union Gas Company-the first commercial gas station in California-and many other charities.* The following is a brief overview of Rancho Cordova history: In 1847 Elias P. Cordova arrived at Stockton with his bride AnnaMaria to purchase 640 acres (250 ha) northward from Mission Indians near what is today downtown San Francisco for $10 per acre ($2/ha). He named the property "Rancho de los Padres," or "Father's Ranch." Announcing this purchase to fellow Alta Californians assembled at Newmark Hall on Market Street on February 17th 1848 cordovans told an estimated 10,000 people who gathered that this vast tract would be theirs for ever*! It wasn't until November 25th 1850 when government surveyors laid out boundaries for townships within southern San Mateo County - ultimately giving rise to current day Martinez & El Cerrito communities - when it became apparent that there was much more land still unclaimed within rancho than originally thought! On December 12th 1850 cordovans received shocking news when Mexican forces invaded Santa Cruz county whileranchos were handling cattle drives through Chico Canyon bristling with artillery fire! Jesse Jameson led a team across Eel River Bridge into Mexico City plundering military stores before making his escape back upriver * resulting in two fatalities*.osteriously enough one year later - during Father Pedro Garza's term as Governor dated January 6th 1851 - part way down Chico Canyon past Eel River Bridge marker(s), public land grants began being issuedMercedes Lomas de la Hoz married Jose Gomez y Atanasoff about this time indicating that some 55 + miles (~80 km+) northward along riverbank may have been newly occupied... The original land for Rancho Cordova was located on the present day corner of Main and Second Streets in what is now downtown San Francisco.
