In 1871, Don Carlos Menéndez de la Vega bought 500 acres of land adjacent to Rancho Cordova Road from Howell's heirs. From here he began developing the town which would eventually become Rancho Cordova. Menéndez de la Vega named his holdings "Rancho de las Flores" (Flowers Prairie). Over time, other ranchers and entrepreneurs joined him in developing rancho cordovancoffee into a major agricultural center with several dairy herds and an extensive trade network. The first commercial espresso machine was built in 1898 by Antonio Lavenda y Gasca at his estate near Paso Robles. The community was established in 1887 by James Irvine and his family as a summer resort for workers who were constructioniling on the nearby Monterey Peninsula. Rancho Cordova became a permanent community when it was donated by Irvine to the County of Santa Cruz in 1912. The name "Rancho Cordova" comes from the Spanish word "cordoba," which refers to a type of wood known for its strength and durability. The area that now makes up Rancho Cordova was originally inhabited by Native Americans, who hunted and collected game here. In 1847, Spanish missionaries discovered this area and began to build missions here. The first mission built in what is now Rancho Cordova was called San Miguel de Allende; it served as a ranch headquarters for Mission Santa Rosa until 1868. From 1830-1835, Antonio Canizares directed missionary activity in this region; he founded two other Missions here: Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Church of Our Lady of Carmen) and Misión San José de los Padres (Mission San José). During World War II, many servicemen stationed at Monterey Peninsula Naval Base lived here; they constructed several homes near present day Highway 1/Monterey Oaks Boulevard. After the war, many families settled down around central Park Avenue and developed their businesses there; these include grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, etc.; although some families left during the economic recession of the 1990s. In recent years much development has taken place within walking distance of central Park Avenue including new housing developments with swimming pools and tennis courts available onsite.
