The United States Air Force deployed gift history in Rancho Cucamonga, California on November 25th, 1944 during World War II. The air force garrisoned a detachment of the 499th Bombardment Squadron at Camp Pendleton. The 499th Bombardment Squadron was part of the 548th Bombardment Wing which was activated at Beale Air Force Base on December 15th, 1943 and served as a bombardment wings combat unit during the war. On October 24th, 1944, Camp Pendleton became an airfield when it was transferred from San Diego to be used as an auxiliary airfield for radar detection missions against Japan over the Pacific Ocean. The 499th Bombardment Squadron arrived at Camp Pendleton on November 25th and began operations under the jurisdiction of 548th Bomber Wing. On December 15th, 1943 the 499st BS Detachment joined forces with another detachment from Long Beach to form what would become known as Task Force 58. Task Force 58 performed strategic patrols over Japanese airspace throughout World War II and also carried out escort duties for American bombers travelling between North America and Europe. From October 24-November 25, 1944 these units patrolled over Japanese airspace providing protection for Allied bombers en route to their drop points in Japan. Due to its location within minutes of downtown Los Angeles by land or sea, Camp Pendleton quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California during World War II. In addition to its military installations and attractions such as playgrounds for children and a movie theater that screened motion pictures until midnight on weekdays, Camp Pendleton also became known for its annual Christmas party which entertained troops stationed there until early January 1945 before they were redeployed back into battle against Japan. Due to this popularity, both Army General George C Marshall and Navy Admiral Chester Nimitz visitedCamp pendleton during this time period in order to observe USAAF operations in detail while they were still ongoing. In addition, several Hollywood stars who resided in Los Angeles made visitstoCamppendleton between 1939-1945 including Rita Hayworth (1935-1987), Barbara Stanwyck (1927-1994), Tyrone Power (1915-1989) and Gene Kelly (1925-1991).
When the United States Air Force deployed its gift of airpower to support Operation Neptune's Spear in Afghanistan in 2009, many Afghans were skeptical. They had never seen an American plane and they did not know how to operate one. However, the USAF flew over their villages and towns and distributed flyers with photos of military jets refueling or landing. The program was initiated by Colonel John P. Haggerty, Jr., commanding officer of the detachment and an experienced airforce veteran. The gift history program is designed to provide a unique and memorable experience for guests who visit Rancho Cucamonga during holiday seasons. The detachment's gift history is composed of items donated by members of the local community and/or family members of service members from the mission-stationed wings of the California Air National Guard. A variety of gifts have been collected over time, including toys, clothes, radios, tools, vehicles and more. Items are also auctioned off each year in order to support charitable causes within the local community. Rancho Cucamonga is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded by the García family in 1853 and named for José Gabriel García Márquez, author of One Hundred Years of Solitude. The community grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location on the edge of a rancho that became a popular site for logging. In 1915, Rancho Cucamonga incorporated as a City. Today, Rancho Cucamonga is an ethnically diverse community with over 30% Latino residents who come from various parts of Mexico and Central America. The city's economy is based largely on agriculture and shopping services provided by its two large supermarkets, SuperValu and Walmart. A number of small businesses have also been established in recent years such as restaurants, art galleries, nightclubs and pet stores. Rancho Cucamonga has several parks including Playland Park which was designed by landscape architect Jens Jensen in 1984; Mission Park which was built between 1951-1957; Donwood Park which opened in 1978; McNary Park which opened in 1988; Toluca Lake Open Space located adjacent to Toluca Lake Recreation Area; and Harcourt Parks located within the city limits but managed by the City government rather than by individual property owners. In addition to these parks there are also several open spaces within easy reach including La Jolla Aquarium (just east of town), Temescal Creek Preserve (northwest of town), Corona Del Mar State Beach (southwest of town) and Sawgrass Golf Course (to the southwest of town).

Rancho Cucamonga, California is located in the far northwestern corner of Los Angeles County. It was founded in 1881 by Capt. George Armstrong Copley and his wife Catherine. The area now comprising Rancho Cucamonga has been owned by a succession of families since then, including the Bontrageros, the Olivares, and the Garlands. The present day community was established in 1909 when a group of farmers led by Will Rogers purchased 640 acres of land east of what is now Garden Grove Boulevard. In 1916, Rancho Cucamonga became part of the newly created City of Los Angeles; it remained an unincorporated municipality until 1959. The rancho was first inhabited by Native Americans who hunted game on its lands for subsistence purposes and later used it as a summer home for wealthy Californian couples such as Governor Edmund G. Brown and actresses Sarah Bernhardt and Edna Ferber. The cattle ranchers who developed the area began to arrive in droves during World War I, bringing their herds with them to graze on virgin grasslands that had not been disturbed by previous settlers. As these ranching families grew prosperous, they turned their attention to growing crops and developing infrastructure such as irrigation systems and schools. By 1930, about 60% of all dairy production within Los Angeles County came from Rancho Cucamonga cows; this figure doubled over the next decade or so as other industries displaced agricultural production in Southern California. During World War II many Japanese-Americans were interned at nearby Ridgemont Army Airfield because it constituted one of two major centers where Axis forces were able to produce airplanes for air combat against American forces; many people within Rancho Cucamonga viewed these internment facilities as a formof punishment instead of liberation because they felt that their properties had been taken away without compensation or any semblance of restitution whatsoever. After the war ended most Japanese-Americans were let loose but some continued to live on property within city limits while awaiting relocation elsewhere in Southern California or abroad; some still reside there today despite efforts by local officials to remove them from their homes entirely (see Ammon Bundy). Rancho Cucamonga was a Mexican land grant in present-day Los Angeles County, California. The Rancho was granted to José Antonio Cucamonga in 1847 by Governor Manuel Nieto. The rancho included the towns of Villa Park and Lancaster. The Cucamongas were among the original settlers in what is now Los Angeles County. In 1864, Jose Antonio's brother Vicente purchased the Rancho from Mexico for $10,000. The family used it as their cattle ranch until 1912 when they sold it to local real estate developer Harry Chandler. The property was developed as a residential area with large houses and gardens, becoming one of Southern California's most fashionable communities during its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s. After World War II, development turned more toward manufacturing and light industry but portions of the ranches still remain well-maintained and offer glimpses into pre-WWII ranch life through open-air tours and interpretive exhibits.
