The Rancho Cucamonga Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's Ninth Air Force. The base was activated in 1942 and played a critical role during World War II as an airbase for bomber operations against Nazi Germany. Today, the Ninth Air Force consists of more than 11,000 military members who provide aerospace protection for Southern California. The First World War saw the activation of the Rancho Cucamonga Air Service Station on December 16, 1915. During World War II, the air service station provided fighter and bomber support to American forces in Europe. In 1947, Rancho Cucamonga became part of Los Angeles County and hence became known as "the City of Angels." The city also built its first airport in 1948 which served as both a commercial airport and military airport until it was closed down in 1961. In 1961, Congress passed legislation authorizing the Wingate Aircraft Corporation to build an airborne unit at Rancho Cucamonga AFB. On October 15, 1962, that unit launched its first mission when two Bell- Boeing B-29 Superfortresses departed from RAF Fairford Airport England for their Mannheim Mission Test Operation (MTO). The mission successfully completed and demonstrated the feasibility of using large bombers offensively against targets within Germany without ground support. Since then, Rancho Cucamonga AFB has been home to numerous aircraft manufacturers including McDonnell Douglas; Boeing Co.; Lockheed Martin; Raytheon Co.; Northrop Grumman Corp.; Saab AB; ATK Missile Systems Inc.; Hughes Electronics Co., llc.; and Beechcraft Corp.. These companies have contributed billions of dollars in research and development resulting in new technologies that have helped make America one of the most advanced militaries on Earth today. Rancho Cucamonga, California is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 33,651 at the 2010 census. It is located east of the city of San Bernardino on Interstate 10 and north of the city of Riverside. The name "Cucamonga" means "sweet pastures." In 1871, Rancho Cucamonga landowner John Sutter bought 100 acres (40 hectares) of land from Juan Barrera for $5 per acre ($27 per hectare). In 1881, he sold an additional 160 acres (60 hectares) to Charles Goodyear for $10 per acre ($40 per hectare). Goodyear assigned a post office called "Cucamonga" to the new land. In 1892, cattle ranchers Jorge Garza and Manuel Nieto acquired title to another 160 acres (60 hectares), becoming known as Rancho Los Nietos. Garza sold portions of his property back to Nieto in 1909. Niello assigned a second post office called "Cucamonga" to the new land. In 1912, he also laid out streets and built a small store on what is now Via Garza (Garza Drive). The store became known as Sun Valley Hardware Store. Niello died in 1928 and was succeeded by his son Noel Niello Jr.. The family continued to run their ranch until it was sold in 1961 to Leland Stanford Sr., founder of Stanford University. At that point many people from nearby cities moved into Cucamonga because living near Palo Alto made it difficult for them to get jobs in Stanford University or elsewhere within Silicon Valley due to its high tuition rates. To keep up with local demand for housing after purchasing the rancho, Leland Stanford Jr.'s father started building homes on much of the original rancho property starting in 1965-1966; these houses are now part of Palo Alto's maintains neighborhoods called Old Palo Alto and Renaissance Park neighbourhoods respectively

They were the first people to own land in what is now San Bernardino County and they also built the first post office here.
