Rancho Cucamonga, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 22,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. The first settlers in Rancho Cucamonga were Juan Bautista Alvarado and his family who arrived from Mexico in 1795. In 1876, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fortified Village near present-day Pasadena and built Adobe Walls to protect his new settlement from attacks by Mexican forces. It is part of the Canon City– Ontario, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Rancho Cucamonga were Diego Rivera and José Romero in 1853. They found white men living on the east side of San Gabriel Creek and decided to name their new rancho after one of the men they encountered there. The town of Cucamonga was founded in 1857 by Captain John Sutter as an adobe trading post on what is now Old Utopia Road. In 1896, Rancho Cucamonga became a part of Los Angeles County when it was created from parts of Inyo and Orange counties. The area that includes present-day Rancho Cucamonga had been under Mexican rule for more than two centuries before that date. At its peak in 1910, Rancho Cucamonga's population numbered over 100 people; however, by 1915 it had shrunk to about 30 due to the influx of American servicemen during World War I and other factors such as increased production at nearby Willowbrook munitions plant. In 1925, following annexation by Pasadena into Los Angeles County, many residents fled westward along Mission Boulevard (now Elysian Valley Road) towards Interstate 10 and beyond because they were fearful that they would become integrated into what they saw as an increasingly racist southern city full of Anglo Protestants. When local officials refused to accept bilingual signs reading "English only" throughout the community – even though English was widely spoken among most residents – some members of the local Hispanic community began building their own housing developments near I-10 instead. This strategy failed but helped set off a pattern whereby Hispanics gradually gained control over much of rural Inyo County until south central Los Angeles finally absorbed them in 1990did so without experiencing any major violence or social upheaval). This history has led some locals to call themselves "Coconutas" or "Tacolanders."
Rancho Cucamonga was founded in 1871 by J.P. Morgan and his brother John Morgan. The name was derived from the Rancho Cucamonga, a Mexican land grant that had been awarded to Juan Antonio Guerra in 1836. The rancho was located on the east side of Valley Boulevard in what is now western Riverside County. In 1881, the brothers divided the ranch into three parts: one part went to J.P.'s son George, one part went to their nephew Hiram Webster Morgan, and the last part went to Edward Fenton Bealluntrei. In 1905, George Morgan died leaving behind a lot of tracts of land for sale which led to Winton Park being developed on some of these lands near downtown Riverside. The post office at Rancho Cucamonga opened in 1872 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1955. One notable resident during this time was dentist Harry Houdini who lived on Catalina Avenue between Orange and La Brea Streets for many years before moving out to live on Summit Avenue above Topanga Hills Presbyterian Church where he continued practicing until his death in 1926.
