During World War II many residents served in the United States military including 3rd Battalion (Interceptor) Company D (C), 25th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division at Camp Roberts near Ranchero and also at Loyola Field at Chino Hills. In 1951 the community became incorporated as a city and continues to be governed by a mayor and council form of government with two mayoral terms each year. The current Mayor is Ed Gonzalez who took office on November 3, 2014

The ranch quickly became one of the most successful in California due to its fertile soil, well-managed cattle herds, easy access to water resources, and friendliness of the local Indigenous communities.

In 1881, Adolph Ziegfeld leased the land from José Ortega to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Leland for $5 per acre. The Leland family ran a theater there until 1915 when they sold it to Hollywood Pictures Corporation. Thereafter, movies were filmed at the site until 1973 when it was shut down because of fires that burned in the lot.
