The area now known as Rancho Cucamonga was purchased by Captain J. P. Power in 1853 and named for him, James Poulson Pomperoy Surveyor General on July 16, 1854 at an cost of $6 per acre ($0.50/km²). In 1865, two families who had recently arrived from New Mexico started a dairy farm there called the Powers Dairy Company which continued until 1922 when it became part of United Dairy Holdings LLC (). On January 1st 1921, the entire 2nd Congressional District including Rancho Cucamonga was placed within newly created Imperial County () with headquarters at Westminster City Hall (). On February 3rd 1916 Ernest Hemingway wrote about his experiences during World War I at Camp Verde near Palm Springs: “We lived on what looked like an Indian reservation with cattle that grazed on cactus hills and we shot deer out back from our house” which can be found on page 219 in his book "A Moveable Feast". On November 10th 1912 Zalma Huffman married George Waddell at Our Lady Of La Purisma Catholic Church in Claremont and they began living on their family's 160 acres (66 ha) east of San Bernardino Mountains where they raised chickens and hogs until 1913 when they built a house also known as Huffman Place (). After her husband's death in 1918 she continued to live there with her son before selling it to Harry Crosby Jr., one time general manager of Western Electric Corporation (), who resided there until his death in 1969. Mrs.'s son then moved into the house until 2003 when it was donated to Pepperdine University by Mrs., Ernie Crosby RN who also served as its first president from 1966-1983 . Today it houses Pepperdine's School of Nursing ().

The ranchos were divided into many parcels which were sold off over time to individuals or businesses who continued farming and ranching activities. One early owner who managed to keep their land intact was General John Blythe who lived at 6055 Encino Road from 1850-1875 inclusive. After he died his livestock passed through several hands before eventually being sold to James Wolkowsky in 1902 for $5 million dollars which made him oneof the wealthiest men in America at that time. Another early rancher was George Hickey who owned tracts betweenEncino Road and Lynwood Boulevard from 1876-1898 inclusive Some later owners include:Benjamin Hackett (1913), Harry Sanger (1945), Leslie Martin (1974) Frank Gehry (1993) . Benedict Arnold had also been residing near Covina during this period but left when he learned about Indian trade routes being used by Mexicans transporting goods across Central Americanand Mexican soil into southern California He also acquired some property northwestofEncino Road where he built an adobe house which remains standing today known as Arnold's House.. Many people associated with Hollywood during this time including William Salyers (), Clarence Darrow (), Howard Hughes () and others live within easy driving distance either down county Route 91 or west on Centinela Street along Hollywood Blvd.. These people contributed greatly to shaping not only Hollywood but also Los Angeles County culturally, politically and economically during the late 19th century through much influence over policymaking in government bodies including both state legislaturesand local councils alike..
In 1847, Rancho Cucamonga was granted to José Joaquin Cisneros. In 1852, John Sargent and his brother-in-law James Irvine patented a tract of land that would become the town of Rancho Cucamonga. The Irvine brothers had been interested in the area since they first visited it in 1849. They named their property "Rancho de los Gavilan" after one of their ancestors who ranched there. The town of Rancho Cucamonga was founded on November 2, 1852 by James Irvine and John Sargent with the help of Gilbert Bacheler and other investors. The townsite was located on what is now Buena Park Boulevard near University Avenue. The town quickly became a commercial center due to its location and access to water supplies from the Angeles National Forest. On February 11, 1860, voters approved a charter for the new city of Rancho Cucamonga which consisted of twenty-one streets with foursquare blocks laid out in an grid pattern. The arrival of railroads led to increased traffic and industry in Rancho Cucamonga; this also contributed to its growth as a municipal entity within the larger cityscape. Industry declined during World War II but grew again following the war's end; this brought more jobs into town which helped keep pace with population growth. During the 1960s ranching gave way to suburban development as people moved away from rural lifestyles for work opportunities in cities. However, recent changes have seen some redevelopment back into ranching as a source of income; this has caused concern over whether or not such activity will continue long into the future given current trends towards suburbanization
