The Air Force has been gifting aircraft and other equipment to different parts of the world since World War II. Rancho Mirage, California is one of the first communities in the United States to receive an air force installation. The original air force base at Miramar was opened in 1942 and served as a training ground for pilots and bomber men from all over the world. In 1957, Rancho Mirage became home to Headquarters Squadron (later Headquarters Air Mobility Command) which was responsible for providing worldwide airspace coverage with its Lockheed L-1011 Starlifter aircraft. In 1992, Headquarters Airmobile Command moved from Miramar to Ramstein AFB Germany and renamed it Headquarters Air Mobility Command (HAMCOM). On 1 July 2002, HAMCOM took over command ofSquadron level units located outside of North America such as 412th Airlift Wing based at RAF Brize Norton in England or 4th Airlift Group based at RAF Wyton in England which provided transport support for NATO operations in Afghanistan.HQ AirmobileCommand also assumed responsibility for Combat Operations Officer programs which provide commanders with enhanced capabilities for deploying forces quickly and effectively across multiple theatres including Special Forces, Homeland Security etc. On 1 October 2008 HQ AirmobileCommand relocated back to Rancho Mirage when they were redesignated Headquarters USAF Rapid Response Unit (HARU) under Pacific Air Forces command. HARU provides rapid response capability within USAF through incident management, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief effort and counterdrug efforts worldwide. This unit is composed of both active duty members and Reserve Component elements activated for short term deployments or rotations on select areas around the world where we can provide our full spectrum aerial services .

The United States Air Force is one of the largest and most powerful air forces in the world. The USAF was formed on October 29, 1947 as a merger of the Army's Air Forces and the Navy's Marine Corps. The USAF has over 117,000 active duty members and more than 240,000 reservists. It is headquartered at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. The USAF has a rich history that goes back to World War I when America entered the conflict as an Allied power. In 1917, Congress passed an act establishing the Department of Aeronautics within the Department of War. On July 16, 1918, President Wilson created the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA) to study new airplane concepts and improve aviation safety. In 1934, NACA developed what would become known as the " Boeing 707", which became America's first commercial airliner. In 1940, Congress established two separate branches ofthe USAF: The Air Forces andthe Ground Forces. The Air Forces was renamed Tactical Command in 1946 and activated combat units under Lieutenant General Curtis LeMay who served as its first Commander-in-Chief until his death in 1951; it was then divided into Strategic Wings (Wings A through E) under Major General George Cates Jr., with Headquarters at Washington National Airport; while Tactical Command remained operational outside Continental United States airspace pending decision by Military Central Command (MCC) whether U2 reconnaissance flights should be conducted from bases within Continental United States airspace or not due to security concerns about Satellites being monitored from abroad by hostile nations such as Russia or China... By 1949 MCC had decided that overflights were unnecessary because Satellite coverage had improved so much that ground based monitoring was no longer necessary." In 1961 Tactical Command was reactivated as Fighter Wing One at MacDill AFB FL with three F-4E Phantom IIs and began operations providing fighter support for NATO allies during Operation Overlord including flying 95% of all Allied missions flown over Europe during those crucial days leading up to Normandy Beach.. Since Tactical Wing One controlled all fighter aircraft stationed within 3 geographical areas: West Coast US; East Coast US; Mediterranean Sea - these included both NATO Allies RAF Dalton AB England & French AF Toulouse France After years of hard work by multiple commanders this culminated with activation of Aerospace Defense Command on 1 May 1968 effective 31 March 1969" Today there are 27 wings/groups operating throughout North America concentrating on fighters (Aerial), bombers (Strategic), Special Operations forces(Airwolf/Night Stalker), Maritime Combatant Commands(Great Lakes Naval Task Force), Missile Defense Agency etc.......Each wing conducts numerous joint projects across different disciplines......The USAF today employs 82 percent women making it one of few major service organizations where woman have reached parity with men

Rancho Mirage is a small city in Riverside County, California, United States. It was founded in 1911 by ranch hands and their families. The city is located on the banks of the Colorado River. Rancho Mirage has a population of about 70,000 people, making it one of the most populous cities in Riverside County. The City of Rancho Mirage was incorporated on December 13, 1912, from portions of Gardena and Sun Valley. The original name for the town was "Sunnyvale". A post office called "Sunnyvale" opened in 1915 and remained in operation until 1922. In 1916, developer Hiram Johnson donated land to the City for a municipal airport. Construction began on what became Rancho Mirage Airport on October 4, 1920; it served as an auxiliary airport for Palm Springs and was used by both local airlines and military pilots during World War I and World War II. After World War II ended, aircraft manufacturing stopped at the airport; however, aviation resumed with commercial service beginning again in 1978 when developer Don Bechtel purchased land adjacent to runway 14/32 at nearby Desert Regional Airport In November 2006 it was announced that Bechtel would close its desert regional airport effective March 1st 2007 due to low demand from tourists which put pressure on other businesses within the area like restaurants etc...doesn't make much sense because there are plenty of other places to visit without having to go near Glendale or Desert Regional Airport
In 1777, Juan José Ortega y Gasset acquired Rancho Mirage from the Cana family. The rancho was located on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard and First Street in Desert Hot Springs. In 1848, it was sold to James Irvine. In 1860, it was purchased by John C. Fremont. The rancho became a part of the Empire State Department in 1912. After World War II, it was owned by Averell Harriman and his wife Jacqueline Bouvier Beale Harriman. It reverted to the Ortega family in 1957 when they died out. The Ortegas were replaced by the Moretses in 1975 and then by the Trammels in 1987 when they died out too. Rancho Mirage is now an unincorporated community within Riverside County controlled by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors
