The Rancho Mirage Army Garrison, located in the heart of wine country, has been a Military installation since 1866. The Outfield Museum chronicles the history of this location and its impact on American culture. Today, the Garrison is home to over 1,500 military members and civilians from all 50 U.S. states and more than 30 countries. The Rancho MirageArmy Garrison was established as part of the California Guerrilla War effort in 1866 by General Antonio López de Santa Anna with the specific mission of suppressing Mexican resistance activity in Southern California. As part of this campaign, units from Company D of Battalion H were deployed to Rancho Mirage to take care of cattle ranchers who had also joined forces with Mexico against U.S interests including Captain John Cveticke’s Bandidos (ranchers). After Indian Wars ended in 1871, ranching continued as a major source of revenue for General Santa Anna and his government while also providing an opportunity for soldiers to earn civilian employment during peacetime periods when those opportunities are few and far between. In 1886, following passage of the National Defense Act which authorized President Grover Cleveland to establish an army presence in California under Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock,[1] Colonel John Sibley became Commandant at Rancho Mirage Army Garrison[2]. A year later he inaugurated one of America’s first internal defense programs when troops were called into action against anarchists who had taken up arms against Spanish authorities near Lancaster about 25 miles east of town on Topanga Canyon Road known as Pueblo del Ranchero.[3] By 1888 there were 4 companies stationed at Rancho Mirage with 100 men each[4]. In 1912 there were 10 companies present with 1,200 enlisted men[5]: these numbers increased slightly during World War I (1918-1921) when barracks were erected at nearby Weatherford Field but then decreased again after hostilities ended; no new barracks were built until 1945 when radar equipment was added permanently to garrison facilities[6]. During World War II (1939-1945), Headquarters 3rd Infantry Division relocated from San Diego to Camp Pendleton on October 20th 1939 upon enrollment into reserves training program which paralleled maneuvers conducted by Ground Forces Western United States Area Command that same day; 3rd ID returned home effective November 8th 1945 having served within GFWUSAC since its creation months earlier[7]. It should be noted that both 3rd ID deployments took place outside OFWAC jurisdiction; however their reestablishment inside OFWAC did not occur until several years later once GFWUSAC was redesignated First Armored Division on January 15th 1949 [8]; therefore elements assigned thereto during WWII would technically fall within Third Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s jurisdiction even though they primarily functioned outside it while activities conducted by 3rd ID within FIRST ACROSS THE VALLEY regularly fell within latter’s operational area responsibilities.
